Media Relations has undergone major changes with the advent of social media. This course is designed and taught by media professionals, providing students with a comprehensive overview. Students explore what makes news and how to attract the attention of news decision-makers, media training, and issues management.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Explain how traditional news media operate and how news is gathered.
Identify contacts in the news media and make relationships with decision-makers.
Describe how social media differs from traditional media.
Write a news release and other media materials tailored to attract the attention of news decision-makers.
Describe ways to best pitch your ideas, product or organization to media outlets.
Discuss strategies to help you and/or your organization take advantage of opportunities the media present.
Detect emerging trends and issues.
Discuss tactics to manage potentially damaging issues.
Explain the role of news media to others.
Describe methods that will help you and/or your organization get your messages out most effectively.
