Course Details

Many organizations today are sitting on mountains of data, yet struggle to extract real business value from it. Business analytics professionals that can leverage data to help a company achieve its business objectives are in high demand. This course introduces students to the world of business analytics and the skills needed for a business analytics professional to be successful. Students will become familiar with real world examples of the successful application of business analytics. This is a hands-on course where students will conduct business analysis projects from start to finish, including identification of business issues, requirements gathering and developing a hypothesis, data preparation and exploration, identifying metrics and best practices in report development, and effectively communicating analytics results. Web Analytics and optimization, qualitative analysis, and unstructured data will also be discussed.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the role of analytics in organizations, be able to communicate the benefits of analytics and give examples of analytics being successfully applied in business
  • Explain how to build an analytics function in an organization, and be able to carry out an analytics project from start to finish using a systematic approach
  • Analyse business, strategy and marketing issues and identify where analytics can provide value
  • Identify opportunities for analytics to provide value in a firm such as customer retention, acquisition and win-back, campaign measurement, assessing business performance, forecasting, merchandise optimization and location analytics
  • Conduct stakeholder interviews, gather requirements, frame business problems and form hypothesis
  • Create and join tabular data sets and demonstrate ability to work with poor quality data. Demonstrate basic understanding of data warehousing and SQL
  • Perform descriptive statistics to understand data, and use various techniques to discover patterns in the data
  • Identify relevant metrics and create effective charts, reports and dashboards
  • Utilize storytelling and visualizations to communicate analytics findings effectively and generate strategic conversation
  • Perform basic web analytics, and create an A/B test. Understand how qualitative research fits into overall decision support. Describe the opportunities in unstructured data, and its unique challenges
