BCIT is planning for a substantial return to on-campus activity for the fall 2021 term as informed by BC Public Health Officer guidelines. Refer to each course listing for details.

Course Details

This course will introduce the technician to principles of air conditioning systems. Topics include: refrigeration theory, system construction and operation, inspection and service, refrigerant recovery, recycling and charging. Shop exercises provide an opportunity to perform air conditioning performance testing and inspections including refrigerant identification, leak detection, evacuation and refilling of systems. This is an ideal course for automotive technicians wishing to brush up on their air conditioning service skills and body shop technicians who are new to air conditioning service.

  1. This is a blended course consisting of 12 hours virtual class followed by 6 hours practical and written exam on BCIT Burnaby Campus. CSA approved safety glasses and footwear required. Footwear must be steel-toed, leather, ankle covering boots. Required textbook may be purchased at BCIT Burnaby Campus Bookstore.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the theory of operation of automotive air conditioning systems.
  • Describe safety precautions and specific service techniques.
  • Identify various automotive air conditioning systems.
  • Service air conditioning systems, including recovery, recycling and refilling of refrigerant.
