Adapted/expanded models of agile learning

I am sharing an update on the Strategic Plan deliverable I’m leading, which falls under our commitment to delivering future-proof applied education and the initiative for interdisciplinary and integrative learning.

Agile learning is part of the BCIT’s Vision to become a recognized leader in the provision of personalized education, relevant in an ever-changing global context. The key components include:

  • continued renewal and growth in Part-time Studies (PTS) programming;
  • adapted and expanded models of work-integrated learning; and
  • new peer and industry partnerships to enhance and expand BCIT’s offerings.

We have moved our Centre for Workplace Education and PTS operations teams into the Academic portfolio, reporting to the Associate Dean, Agile and Work Integrated Learning. This move forms the base for capturing and building on agile learning initiatives across the Institute.

There are nine generally recognized types of Work Integrated Learning (WIL) in Canada and BCIT’s programs reflect these very well. The Agile and Work Integrated Learning team are actively building on this. We encourage you to participate in the ThoughtExchange discussion that is currently underway to help inform future directions of WIL in various areas of the Institute.

We have launched 22 microcredentials that are offered as of Spring 2022 and several more are under development. This continues to be an exciting form of competency specific education that is relevant to students and to industry. BCIT has already partnered with peer post-secondary institutes in offering some of these microcredentials and we continue to engage with industry partners to identify additional opportunities. One particularly exciting example is the Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) Fundamentals Microcredential that BCIT is offering jointly with the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade.

Thank you,
