Hygiene

The BCIT Occupational Health and Safety Hygiene Program comprises chemical, biological and physical safety programs that have been developed to ensure the health and safety of BCIT employees, students and visitors, and to ensure that BCIT’s facilities, property, equipment and procedures comply with campus policy and statutory requirements.

The procedures in the Hygiene Program provide guidance and direction for the interpretation and administration of occupational hygiene policies and practices.

Biological hygiene program

Biological safety, or bio-safety is the application of knowledge, techniques and equipment to prevent personal, laboratory and environmental exposure to potentially infectious agents or bio-hazards. The BCIT Biological Safety Program is centered on the prevention and control of human exposure to bio-hazards.

This is done by providing knowledge, awareness, and safety guidelines for work in Biological Laboratories in addition to exposure control plans for a variety of pathogens such as the influenza virus, West Nile virus, pigeon droppings and blood-borne pathogens.

Chemical hygiene program

Chemical safety refers to safe handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances. The BCIT Chemical Safety Program provides knowledge, awareness and safety guidelines for work in laboratories, Exposure Control Plans for designated substances, and information and instructions on how to use the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS).

Physical hygiene program

Physical safety involves prevention and control of hazards caused by physical agents such as ergonomics, noise, heat, light, vibration, pressure, wood dust and radiation. The BCIT Physical Safety Program provides students and employees with knowledge, awareness, Exposure Control Plans and safety guidelines with regard to these hazards.
