For most BCIT community members, the majority of their time spent at the institute is in an indoor location. That is why it is extremely important for the institute that healthy indoor environment quality (IEQ) is maintained at BCIT. IEQ is a term used to describe aspects of indoor environments, such as air quality, noise, and lighting, with respect to occupant health and comfort. Factors that affect IEQ include:
- Weather and climate.
- Size and layout of the space and number of occupants.
- Activities and behaviours of occupants both in and outside of a space.
- The building’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system.
- The presence of odours, dust, particulate matter, and other contaminants both in and outside of a building.
The BCIT IEQ Assessment Program details the activities and services performed within the Institute to maintain IEQ and investigate and resolve reported issues.
