BCIT’s Web Technologies Certificate gives you a flexible, fully online program that fits both your schedule and your learning needs. You’ll be able to organize the classes you take based on your own timeline to get the most up-to-date information and training developed by working industry professionals. With the advanced courses in web technologies, you’ll hone your skills with XML, jQuery Mobile, Flash, and more to prepare you for an exciting career in web design.

By developing a strong foundation of design and technical skills, including designing for mobile devices with the most current software, you’ll be poised to launch a career in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, sales, high-tech industries, retail, health, business, transportation, advertising, and professional services. Almost every industry and field now requires a web presence and qualified personnel to maintain it.

With your Certificate in Web Technologies and the creative portfolio you’ll develop in your courses, you’ll have a wide range of career prospects, including entry-level positions like web designer, web producer, new media specialist, social media manager, and more.

Entrance Requirements

About Part-time Studies

Take a single course, or work towards a credential — all at a pace that’s right for you.

Part-time courses are offered in a variety of scheduling formats, including at night or on weekends, flexible day time delivery, or you can opt for distance or online learning. If you meet the prerequisites and there’s space available, you can register for a course immediately. Courses are offered in each of three terms: Fall (September), Winter (January) and Spring/Summer (April).

To apply to a Part-time Studies program and earn your credential, you simply need to complete a Part-time Program Declaration Request. Applications are processed throughout the year.

Applicants to the BCIT School of Business are required to have completed two years of full-time study in high school or post-secondary program in English in an English speaking country. If you do not have English 12 and have not studied in an English-speaking country, you will need to demonstrate your skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The courses you’ll take in earning this certificate have been developed and are taught by working industry professionals. Through the series of 16 courses, you’ll get hands-on training with today’s most up-to-date technology and programs, including CSS, Photoshop, HTML, XML, and more. Additionally, you’ll have courses like Audio and Visual Technologies for Web Publishing, WordPress Content Management System and Mobile Design, and Responsive Web Design.

You’ll earn your certificate entirely online with a flexible schedule to fit your needs and prepare you for a successful, rewarding career in web design.

Students with approved Program Declaration, please note: Program matrix changes effective September 2016 may impact you as follows.

  • If your program declaration lists MDIA 4303 – Advanced Web Design and you have not completed it, please complete MDIA 4302 – Modern Web Design instead.
  • If your program declaration lists MDIA 4304 – Advanced Cascading Style Sheets and you have not completed it, please complete MDIA 4500 – Final Project: Portfolio instead, as the last course in the Certificate program.

Please note: part-time programs and courses are open enrolment and although we make every effort to accommodate demand, course registration cannot be guaranteed in every semester. High demand courses fill quickly and may result in students unable to register for a course that semester. Courses may also be cancelled due to low enrolment.

Program Details

The Web Technologies Certificate program gives you more in-depth, more technical training for the creation, repair, and maintenance of websites.

In this online 16 course program, you’ll begin by creating a storyboard for a series of web pages and learn how to use effective presentation and navigation techniques. Throughout the program, you’ll build a portfolio of work to help with your job search by creating your own websites, which will include images, sound and video clips, and Flash animation. Then, at the end of the program, you’ll draw together all of your knowledge and skills and present them in a personal, online portfolio.

The Web Technologies program will give you the skills and experience to:

  • write computer code in HTML, XML and XHTML
  • create cascading style sheets (CSS)
  • design and produce optimized web graphics
  • use Adobe Photoshop to adjust and optimize web images
  • create audio and video files for the web
  • create web animation with Adobe Flash
  • write computer code using JavaScript, DHTML, PHP and AJAX
  • work with ASP and ColdFusion scripting
