If any of these steps don’t result in what you are looking for, it indicates that no outline is currently available. If you are looking for an outline from a current term please check back closer to the start of the course or consult another outline from a previous term.  Please keep in mind that the content from previous outlines may be different than current offerings of the course. The course outline is a statement of educational intent and direction, providing BCIT students with clear, concise, accurate and readily available information related to course content and administration. BCIT course outlines are governed by Policy 5403 and the creation of course outlines is subject to the procedure described in 5403-PR1.

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Apply safe work practices
  • Describe the causes and results of accidents
  • Describe role of the Workers Compensation Board
  • Describe the workplace responsibilities supervisors, and workers
  • Identify the Occupational Health and Safety regulations that apply to shop situations
  • Obtain WHMIS Certification
  • Use safety precautions and procedures relating to personal apparel and general housekeeping
  • Describe emergency equipment and facilities
  • Describe how workplace safety policy is established
  • Describe lock out and tag out procedures and shut off systems
  • Describe electrical safety
  • Describe safety in confined spaces
  • Describe use of barriers and safety devices
  • Use shop safety equipment
  • Use proper lifting techniques for trades specific materials
  • Describe how fires start (fire triangle)
  • Identify the equipment used to extinguish small fires
  • Describe proper methods for preventing fires
  • Recognize safe use of ladders and scaffolds
  • Define step ladder safety inspection
  • Explain WCB minimum requirements for a fall protection work plan

  • Identify components of a personal fall arrest system
