The course outline is a statement of educational intent and direction, providing BCIT students with clear, concise, accurate and readily available information related to course content and administration. BCIT course outlines are governed by Policy 5403 and the creation of course outlines is subject to the procedure described in 5403-PR1.

Medical Laboratory Science - MLSC

Course Learning Outcomes/Competencies

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate further safe work practices by applying standard precautions, laboratory hygiene, infection control practices and use of personal protective equipment and laboratory safety devices.
  • Build on analytical processes utilizing light measuring, electrochemical, osmometry, and point of care systems.
  • Describe and perform analytical techniques utilizing reflectance and immunoassay methods.
  • Maintain and operate automated chemistry instrumentation according to standard operating procedures.
  • Illustrate proficiency in dilution techniques with various laboratory pipettes and solution preparation techniques.
  • Perform and interpret macroscopic and microscopic urinalysis
  • Evaluate and discuss analytical quality requirements to ensure accuracy of laboratory results by applying pre-examination, examination, and post-examination checks.
  • Identify potential sources of analytical error or limitations and employ corrective action.
  • Apply analytical method principles that assess additional organ system functions learned in term 1
  • Conduct appropriate action according to established protocols when patient results are identified as critical, implausible, out of analytical range, and/or priority testing is required.
  • Validate, document, interpret, and correlate patient test results with clinical conditions and initiate any follow-up testing prior to reporting.
  • Interact using effective communication, interpersonal skills, and team skills to maintain professional relationships.
