Course Learning Outcomes/Competencies

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify the environmental factors that must be considered in managing airport operations and activities and understand the concept of sustainability.
  • Discuss the impact of Canadian environmental legislation on existing, planned and under development airports.
  • Describe the framework for the environmental management of airport operations and development on the airport site, surrounding communities and the environment in general.
  • Describe airport-related operations that may affect air quality.
  • Discuss the problems of noise around an airport and understand the need for managing aircraft noise at airports.
  • Describe the mechanisms available to prevent, minimize and manage the contamination of surface and ground water from airport operations.
  • Explain the purpose, sections, contents and amendment procedures associated with preparing an Airport Operations manual.
  • Describe techniques for management of birds and wildlife at airports.
  • Understand the importance of providing training, orientation and public education on environmental issues and responsibilities at an airport.
  • Describe the sources, types and control of industrial waste from airport activities.
