Course Description

This communication course is designed for students needing additional assistance in meeting the language standards of a credit introductory business and technical Communication course. It teaches practical business communication techniques for planning, organizing, selecting, writing, and presenting information in business or industry. It covers the same content as COMM 1103, but has additional English language support and communication development. NOTE: Students do not need to submit transcripts for entrance to this course. BUT, in the case of formal or informal grade appeals or reviews they will be asked to show proof of their English requirements. Students who wish to confirm their English level are strongly advised to take COMM 0015.

Course Learning Outcomes/Competencies

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Follow a systematic process in planning and writing business and technical documents.
  • Select and organize information to meet the needs of your readers.
  • Write sentences that are clear, concise, easily readable, and correct.
  • Use a positive, audience-oriented tone in written and oral communication.
  • Make written information more accessible through appropriate use of headings, lists, and white space.
  • Use the most effective strategies and patterns in organizing routine memos, emails, letters and short reports.
  • Prepare and deliver an effective oral presentation on a work-related topic.
  • Critically evaluate information to determine if it is accurate, relevant, and complete, and to use critical thinking to develop strong arguments.

**You can buy the e-book in the BCIT bookstore. You may be able to buy a used one that is also the Fifth Canadian Edition. I use the Fifth Canadian Edition for quizzes and activities and do not know about changes between editions. Buyer beware.

  1. Grammar Book: The Bare Essentials, 9th Edition Sarah Norton and Student Workbook for The Bare Essentials, 9th Edition Sarah Norton

Please do not ask me to recommend or say if an old version is acceptable as I really do not know enough to give you an informed opinion. There is obviously risk and differences that you must accept. I only recommend the current editions and do not prepare alternative activities or assessments for older versions.

Evaluation deadlines are important in this class and are enforced to the minute. Deductions may range from 10% to 100%, depending on the assessment and lateness. You must have access to reliable electronic devices (you will be typing) and a good internet connection. You will need to be able to use Powerpoint and Word document, which is available free to all BCIT students, so gain access if you do not have it. If you have technical issues close to your assessment deadlines, please contact me immediately. Nothing is accepted beyond 30 minutes with no effort to communicate with me, and then it is up to my discretion depending on the problem. I may allow you to re-take an assignment or exam but a minimum of 20% may be charged depending on the situation. Persistent technological issues during assessments will not be accepted as an excuse.

If you have a valid emergency that you can support with official documentation, then alternative assessment solutions can be accommodated (alert me and then contact the Program Head for evaluation). It is always better to be direct and discuss before the assessment of any potential problem. Often a compromise can be found that is not available afterwards. Plagiarism and cheating are not tolerated. By reading these rules of conduct, you accept that anything that you submit is your own work and there will be penalties imposed due to late submissions when no official documentation is provided.

Attendance Requirements

I take attendance from the Virtual Classroom participation. Thus, you need to join the Virtual Classroom, participate in every lesson and be prepared to answer questions and join in breakout rooms. If I notice that you are not joining in the breakout rooms or have left your device on but are not responding to my inquiries, you will be marked absent. If you arrive more than 20 minutes late to a Virtual Classroom, you will be marked absent. If you leave the Virtual Classroom early without special permission, then you will be marked absent.

A student who misses 20% of their classes due to unexcused absences may fail the course. If a student has a valid medical or personal reason for missing classes, then the relevant documents need to be submitted to the Program Head once I have been consulted. Please remember that as soon as BCIT deems it safe, classes will be on campus again.

Other information

I will be videotaping the course primarily for attendance purposes. I will not provide access to students unless there is an emergency with proper documentation. All students enrolled in this class accept this videotaping requirement.

Technology and internet connection are difficult for everybody, but all students need to have good internet access and a reliable electronic device for this course. I tend to be flexible for the 1st incident and then assume that you have taken steps to ensure a better electronic device or internet connection. It is your responsibility to have the materials, an electronic device, and internet infrastructure to successfully complete the course online.

Guidelines for School of Computing and Academic Studies

Attempts:
Students must successfully complete a course within a maximum of three (3) attempts at the course. Students with two attempts in a single course will be allowed to repeat the course only upon special written permission from the Associate Dean. Students who have not successfully completed a course within three attempts will not be eligible to graduate from their respective program.
