In an information-based society, understanding data management is vital. The backbone of the Internet, Cloud Computing, and Business Intelligence are relational database management systems. The use and manipulation of data is the key to utilize business information to create a competitive advantage. This course introduces relational database management systems, data modeling, and artificial intelligence. Students will use Microsoft Access, a relational database management system, to create data models and build data applications. An introduction to Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning tools and models will also be included in the course.
Course Learning Outcomes/Competencies
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain when and why a database should be created.
- Understand and Use database terminology.
- Construct a database using a relational database management system.
- Design and modify tables.
- Explain and illustrate the data modeling process using normalization.
- Build table relationships to meet business requirements.
- Create single table and multiple-table based forms.
- Search, modify, and analyze data using queries.
- Create and customize reports to summarize and gain insights into data.
- Export/Import data in various formats such as csv and xlsx.
- Describe Machine Learning (ML) concepts and algorithms.
- Conduct ML experiments using MS Azure cloud platform.
- Describe the benefits of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML).
- Compare various prediction models such as regression and classification.
- Carry out ML experiments using dataset preparation, training, and testing modules.

1. Students must achieve a minimum average 50% on their exams before any account of assignment marks is made. If you do not achieve a minimum average of 50% on your combined exams, you will have failed this course – in this event, your assignments mark will not be considered as a part of your final mark.

Intro to Artificial Intelligence

Guidelines for School of Business + Media
Students must successfully complete a course within a maximum of three (3) attempts at the course. Students with two attempts in a single course will be allowed to repeat the course only upon special written permission from the Associate Dean. Students who have not successfully completed a course within three attempts may not be eligible to graduate from their respective program.
Regular attendance in lectures and labs is seen as integral to student success, therefore, attendance in class is monitored. Unexcused absences in excess of 10% of the time prescribed for this course may result in the assignment of a failing grade. Attendance may be taken at any time during class. A student not present for attendance will be marked absent. A student who leaves class for a period of time deemed excessive by the instructor may be considered absent regardless of whether they are present when attendance is taken.
In case of illness or other unavoidable absence, students must communicate with the instructor, or the appropriate Program Head, as soon as possible (preferably in advance) indicating the reason for the absence. Students who are seeking accommodation for a medical absence must have a BCIT-approved medical certificate ). For other absences, students must be prepared to provide appropriate supporting documentation.
A student who has unexcused absences in excess of 10% of the time prescribed for the course by the Withdrawal Deadline is considered to have ‘Vanished’ and will be assigned a grade of ‘V’. In these cases, no further work will be graded.
