Course Description

This university-transferable course focuses on the psychologist's approach to theories, problems and issues in contemporary psychology. This survey course introduces the student to the following areas of psychology: theories of personality, psychological disorder and its treatment, health psychology, emotion and motivation, social psychology and cultural influences, developmental changes over the life span, thought and intelligence.

Course Learning Outcomes/Competencies

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Discuss the contribution of the psychoanalytic, trait, behavioral and humanistic perspectives in explaining the various aspects of personality and its assessment.
  • Describe the etiology of psychological disorders from the various psychological as well as biological perspectives and identify the distinguishing features of anxiety disorders, mood disorders, schizophrenic disorders, personality disorders, dissociative disorders, somatoform disorders, and substance-related disorders.
  • Describe the various methods of therapy for psychological disorders from the psychoanalytic, behavioral, cognitive, humanistic, and biological perspectives.
  • Describe the research findings regarding the nature of stress, reactions to stressors, the impact of stress on health, and effective coping and stress management techniques.
  • Describe current research findings examining the various psychological and biological components involved in emotion, with a focus on aggression and anger.
  • Describe the current theories regarding the biological factors involved in various motivational states, with a focus on attachment and sexual motivation, as well as achievement motivation.
  • Explain current developmental perspectives and research findings regarding cognitive, physical, and social changes which occur across the lifespan, from conception to old age.
  • Explain current research findings and theories examining the manner in which social behaviours of individuals can be influenced by the presence and behavior of other people, as well as factors involved in the formation of attributions and attitudes about others and the self.
  • Describe general findings on cultural differences and factors which influence cross-cultural relations.
  • Describe basic research findings regarding the nature of thought and intelligence.

Course Goals

This second of two courses introduces modern psychology’s perspectives on the complexity of human behaviour and interaction. It includes: development, personality, emotions, stress, and health, social psychology, motivation, psychological disorders, and treatment. This course provides 15 weeks - 3 hours/week - through a combination of lectures, text-based study, and facilitated discussions. (3 Credits)

The goal of this course is that the student understands and is able to explain contemporary psychological perspectives and research findings on various psychological theories and concepts.

Attendance Requirements

Attendance for every class and the whole class time is compulsory. Logging in significantly late or logging out significantly early may lead to voiding attendance for that day. Missing more than 2 classes without an acceptable reason may result in not obtaining a passing grade.

Course Specific Requirements

Exams (3 Exams = 71% of TOTAL MARK) will consist of multiple-choice questions; these will cover material from the readings and from class. Because some of the material covered in class is not in the textbook, regular attendance is necessary. Similarly, you will be responsible for all material in the readings, even if it is not covered in class. Exams are not cumulative. Failure to attend an exam will result in a grade of 0 for that exam unless a physician’s note is provided or other arrangements are made prior to the day of the exam.

Chapter study guides (7%) are your own notes from each chapter to help you study for the exams. This can take the form of main points on a paper, colour-coded terms/definitions, drawings/diagrams, mind-maps, or any other combination of these. It is recommended to take notes of the material that you find important for exams such as definitions, concepts, interpretations. The better this is done, the more useful it is for studying. This will be turned in by email for each chapter on the day the chapter is covered in class. Each study guide will be marked up to 1% if they are on time (i.e., at or before the start of class on the due date), are a minimum of 2 pages, and show some thought, effort, and understanding of material from the chapter (not from the lecture slides). They will be marked as low as 0 if they are late or lacking in the above criteria. Copying and pasting text will not receive marks.

Presentation (15%) is a 10-minute presentation for each student. The student will review a topic of your choice that was covered in class. You will present a review of the area from the textbook as well as find a movie/TV show or printed story where the character(s) represents the topic you chose. You will apply your knowledge of psychology by using the class textbook plus one other valid source to identify and inspect the accuracies and inaccuracies of the video/story that you chose. How accurate did the video/story portray the psychological information based on your textbook and other valid source? After your presentation, you are to pose a minimum of one question about your topic to the class to generate a discussion. If you choose to pair with a partner, the presentation will be 20 minutes with two additional sources and two discussion questions (students will still be marked individually).

Presentation evaluation (3%) is a short form that you will complete for all group presentations. The form will ask for your feedback on your classmates’ presentations. This will be collected and then typed and sent to each group to receive constructive feedback on what they did well and what they can improve on (your name will be removed before comments are sent to your classmates). The evaluation form will be marked up to 3% if sufficient feedback is completed for all group presentations.

Class participation and deportment (4%) means on time, staying logged in for the whole class time, present with your camera on, participation in discussions and activities, and respectful of everyone in class. Students who show any type of non-participation or distractions during class will be at risk of losing marks each time this occurs.

Attempts:
Students must successfully complete a course within a maximum of three (3) attempts at the course. Students with two attempts in a single course will be allowed to repeat the course only upon special written permission from the Associate Dean. Students who have not successfully completed a course within three attempts will not be eligible to graduate from their respective program.
