Course Description

Introduces basic principles of wood frame building construction. Develops skills to produce a basic set of construction working drawings. Topics; western platform wood frame construction; wall framing, floor framing and roof framing for a single family residence.

Course Learning Outcomes/Competencies

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

• Identify architectural working drawing requirements.
• Size sawn timber components to part 9 code compliance.
• Prepare a partial set of architectural working drawings.

Course Goals

The course goal is to provide students with an understanding of western frame construction through the production of architectural working drawings including implementation of proper construction standards and code requirements. The course also introduces basic drafting skills, as required for the production of working drawings.

TOTAL	100%	Students unable to take the midterm or final exam, due to illness, must submit a medical certificate to the instructor. The certificate must state the time period in question and state that the student was unable to attend class due to medical reasons.

Information for Students

Assignments: Late assignments, lab reports or projects will not be accepted for marking. Assignments must be done on an individual basis unless otherwise specified by the instructor.

Makeup Tests, Exams or Quizzes: There will be no makeup tests, exams or quizzes. If you miss a test, exam or quiz, you will receive zero marks. Exceptions may be made for documented medical reasons or extenuating circumstances. In such a case, it is the responsibility of the student to inform the instructor immediately.

Ethics: BCIT assumes that all students attending the Institute will follow a high standard of ethics. Incidents of cheating or plagiarism may, therefore, result in a grade of zero for the assignment, quiz, test, exam or project for all parties involved and/or expulsion from the course.

Attendance: The attendance policy as outlined in the current BCIT Calendar will be enforced. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each session. Students not present at that time will be recorded as absent.

Illness: A doctor’s note is required for any illness causing you to miss assignments, quizzes, tests, projects or exam. At the discretion of the instructor, you may complete the work missed or have the work prorated.

Transfer Credit

Equivalent Part-time Studies courses may be transferable to the Architectural and Building Engineering Technology diploma program based on the recommendations of the diploma instructor and the program head. In order to be considered for a course credit, students must already be accepted into the diploma program and are required to demonstrate competency of the subject matter by having earned a minimum final grade in the equivalent course. Guidelines for School of Construction and the Environment

Attempts:
Students must successfully complete a course within a maximum of three (3) attempts at the course. Students with two attempts in a single course will be allowed to repeat the course only upon special written permission from the Associate Dean. Students who have not successfully completed a course within three attempts will not be eligible to graduate from their respective program.
