SUMMARY:Building as a Living Lab: Mass Timber and Wellness in BCIT’s Campus Services Centre
DESCRIPTION:The Campus Services Centre is one of the key components of the Trades and Technology Complex\, currently under construction at the Burnaby Campus. \nThe finished building will incorporate offices\, trades shops and a logistics warehouse\, but the design will be a showcase for mass timber construction and how this can contribute to wellness for the occupants. \nIn this Living Labs Lecture\, Carol Phillips and Troy Wright from Moriyama Teshima Architects who were part of the architectural team who developed this project alongside Carscadden Stokes McDonald\, will be joined by Benedict Angus from structural engineers Fast+Epp will look at how Mass Timber construction technologies have been applied in this building and the relationship between Mass Timber and health and wellness. \nThe presentation will also discuss how the Modern Methods of Construction like off site prefabrication\, which are used in this building are being applied nationally. \n\n\n\nBiographies \nCarol Phillips \, Partner at Moriyama Teshima Architects\, is a recognized leader with over 30 years of experience shaping transformative places for communities. A Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada\, she has been at the forefront of sustainable design\, pioneering low-carbon and mass timber construction while advancing net-zero carbon strategies. Her portfolio spans academic institutions\, cultural landmarks\, and civic buildings across Canada and internationally\, each project marked by innovation\, inclusivity\, and environmental responsibility. \nGuided by a design philosophy that emphasizes the connection between people\, place\, and nature\, Carol creates architecture that fosters collaboration\, cultural sensitivity\, and ecological stewardship. Her empathetic and collaborative approach ensures that every project not only responds to the climate crisis but also strengthens community bonds and enhances the human experience through beautiful\, inspiring\, thoughtful\, and context-driven design. \nTroy Wright is a Senior Architect with over 25 years of experience in residential and institutional projects. He takes an intuitive and diligent approach\, working closely with principal architects\, colleagues\, and clients through all stages of design and construction administration. From broad conceptual ideas to focused detailed problem solving\, Troy explores the full potential of all projects in a positive and co-creative atmosphere that endeavours to elevate the practice of architecture to a level that exceeds expectations. \nBenedict Angus is a Chartered Structural Engineer with over ten years’ experience in construction. Since joining Fast+ Epp in 2022\, he has worked on numerous mass timber and hybrid structures\, with a focus on design for fabrication\, buildability\, and collaborative delivery. His work integrates innovative structural systems\, particularly mass timber and prefabricated construction\, alongside low-carbon materials. \nThrough his Master’s research\, he tested traditional Japanese timber connections fabricated from glulam\, exploring how historic principles can inform modern engineered wood systems. His portfolio spans projects from the expansion of Kelowna Airport to sensitive structural interventions within the historic fabric of Buckingham Palace. \nHis work reflects a belief that innovation emerges not only from new technologies\, but from a deep understanding of material history\, craft\, and construction and fabrication logic. \n

DESCRIPTION:BCIT’s new Robert Bosa Carpentry Pavilion is now under construction at the Burnaby Campus. The completed building will be a state-of-the-art home for BCIT’s carpentry programs. SUMMARY:Developing an Integrated Design Approach for an Infrastructure Project: A Case Study from BCIT’s SCIR Project 
DESCRIPTION:BCIT’s South Campus Infrastructure Renewal Project is a complex initiative that combines major updates to underground infrastructure with upgrades to the public realm that enhance landscaping\, accessibility\, and sustainability.  \nThe aim of the project is to prepare the Burnaby Campus for future development by addressing critical infrastructure needs\, the replacement of utility systems\, and realignment of utility corridors\, in a way that integrates with future developments such as the daylighted Guichon Creek.  \nThis Living Labs Lecture will explore the integrated design process for this project. Presenters from BCIT’s Campus Planning and Facilities team will join the architects working on the project to discuss how priorities for the long-term development of the campus\, like stormwater management\, and the restoration of Guichon Creek\, inform the design. DESCRIPTION: The team working on BCIT’s new Concert Properties Centre for Trades and Technology have been refining a design that meets BCIT’s stringent climate targets\, while delivering an outstanding and comfortable space for BCIT’s staff and students to learn and work in. \nThis Living Labs lecture will discuss how natural climatic forces can be used to create comfortable interior environments that are also highly energy efficient. \nThis will focus on the design of the Concert Properties Centre and how the integration of natural ventilation and maximized daylighting\, can serve as a model of energy-efficient\, occupant-focused\, and resilient design. \nConsultants Sean Casey from Introba and Riley Beise from Focal Engineering who worked on the design will look at how this innovative approach was developed in practice. SUMMARY:Sustainability and South Campus Infrastructure Renewal an Envision Case Study

This offers a holistic approach\, emphasizing environmental\, social\, and economic benefits. \nIn this Living Labs lecture Jill Roth\, and Quin MacKenzie\, from Luuceo Consulting will look at how the Envision Framework is being applied to the SCIR project and how it can be used in enhancing large scale infrastructure developments \nTopics include: \n\nUnderstanding the Envision framework and its relevance to campus infrastructure.\nHow early design workshops and guidelines shape sustainable outcomes.\nSCIR’s sustainability wins as practical applications of Envision principles.\nThe certification process and scoring criteria for sustainable infrastructure.\n\nPresenters:  \n\nJill Roth\, Senior Consultant\, Vice President at Luuceo Consulting\nQuin MacKenzie\, Lead Executive Officer at Luuceo Consulting\n\n\nLuuceo Consulting\nLuuceo is a small\, entirely women-owned sustainability and strategic solutions firm\, based out of British Columbia’s Lower Mainland. We collaborate with organizations and project teams to implement sustainability\, risk\, and resilience best practices. \nLuuceo has worked on infrastructure projects and programs ranging from $1M to $4.9B in capital cost and spanning a variety of delivery models\, industries\, and sectors. Luuceo also works with clients at an organizational level to develop implementable and impactful strategies to support long-term sustainability and resilience. \nJill Roth \nJill is an Environmental Engineer with over 14 years of environmental and sustainability consulting experience. Transitioning from contaminated sites investigations and remediation projects to facilitating the implementation of sustainable infrastructure\, she now works with project delivery teams to incorporate sustainability and resilience strategies to improve project performance and meet organizational goals. She was the Lead ENV SP on Canada’s first project to earn an award under version 3 of the Envision framework\, and most recently led BCIT’s Guichon Creek Restoration Project through verification to receive a Platinum award. \nQuin MacKenzie  \nQuin is the Lead Executive Officer of Luuceo\, a sustainability consultant\, and credentialed ENV SP\, Envision Trainer and Verifier\, and WELL AP. For over a decade\, she has provided strategic advisory services to infrastructure owners across North America\, applying recognized frameworks such as Envision and the Integrated Design Process to advance sustainability and resilience objectives. She has worked with BCIT since 2017 to advise on campus development. Quin serves on the Envision Review Board\, is a rostered UNECE Project Evaluator\, and co-authored the UNECE Guidelines on enhancing engagement in Public-Private Partnerships for the SDGs. \n

SUMMARY:Decommissioning of BCIT’s Energy OASIS Microgrid
DESCRIPTION:A Living Labs Lecture  \nWednesday October 15th\, 2025 \nEnergy OASIS was launched in 2014 by BCIT’s Smart Microgrid Applied Research Team (SMART) and partners\, as a pioneering campus microgrid. \nIn the last decade it has been a dynamic platform for research in solar renewable energy\, battery energy storage\, and electric vehicles charging infrastructure. The Energy OASIS charging site has also been one of the most recognisable landmarks on the south side of campus. \nWith the end of the research project\, Energy OASIS was decommissioned earlier this year as part of the South Campus Infrastructure Renewal project. \nThis special lecture will focus on the history and legacy of this unique project and the process of decommissioning the physical infrastructure of the solar arrays in a sustainable way. \nJanet So Research Associate\, with SMART will provide an overview of the OASIS project from initial design and deployment to decommissioning.  Janet has been involved in the project for 15 years\, so is uniquely placed to look at OASIS’s daily operations\, research successes\, and what’s next for the SMART team. \nAdam Plumley and Ryan Ferreira from PCL will complete the story of OASIS by discussing the project to decommission the site. This will include the project background\, sequencing and safety\, and the recycling or reuse of many of the materials including the PV panels\, EV chargers\, steel structures and concrete. \nFinally\, Janusz Menezla Associate Principal with OMB will look forward to the future development of the site as the South Campus Infrastructure renewal project takes shape in the coming years. \nPresenters\nJanet So: Research Associate\, BCIT Smart Microgrid Applied Research Team \nJanet has been a core member of SMART for over 15 years. She played a key role in the initial design and deployment of Energy OASIS and was involved in its commissioning and testing. As the system’s primary operator\, she managed daily operations\, diagnostics\, and troubleshooting. Janet also led over 100 tours for local\, national\, and international visitors\, sharing insights into the microgrid’s technologies and impact. \nAdam Plumley: Project Manager: PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. \nAdam has over 15 years of construction management experience and an additional 4 years of onsite construction work experience. He has been a project manager in the Special Projects division for over 9 years and has managed multiple projects simultaneously from design concept to project completion. These multiple projects had Adam dealing with customized building solutions for clients which have included new builds\, interior and exterior upgrades\, renovations\, replacements\, and renewals. He brings extensive experience to the team with his years of work on post-secondary campuses and\, specifically\, BCIT. \nRyan Ferreira: Project Superintendent: PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc. \nRyan’s construction experience is based on a diverse background of projects. During his 19 years in construction\, Ryan has been involved with projects from their intricate planning stages to final completion. His strong field related experience gives him the ability to manage and supervise a variety of construction projects. Ryan works to achieve a positive working relationship between owners\, designers\, contractors\, and employees. \nJanusz Menezla: Associate Principal: office of mcfarlane biggar architects + designers \nOriginally from Germany\, Janusz studied architecture at Bauhaus University in Weimar\, with formative stints in Madrid and Washington\, D.C. After a friend convinced him to move to London for a lark\, he wound up staying for seven years\, honing his leadership and project management skills as well as becoming a registered architect and firm associate. For the past decade at omb\, Janusz has led and successfully delivered complex\, large-scale transportation\, educational\, commercial\, and residential projects. \n  \n\nSmart Microgrid Applied Research Team (SMART) \nThe Smart Microgrid Applied Research Team (SMART) has established a reputation for their unique expertise in the strategic research area of the Smart Microgrid.
