Core Shack Training Facility
The BCIT Core Shack Training Facility will be a one-of-a-kind lab in Canada to provide training on the geological and geotechnical aspects of collecting data from core. This facility will support BCIT's new Mining and Mineral Resource Engineering Degree, and our Mineral Exploration and Mining Diploma program that celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015. It will also play a key role as an industry training facility.
This facility will include:
- Core logging room (with benches and desks);
- Sample prep room (for cutting, crushing/grinding, etc.);
- Clean room for sample preparations; and
- Geotechnical laboratory with various testing equipment (for specific gravity measurements, point load, shear, uniaxial, and triaxial tests).
Request for supportThe estimated overall cost of the Core Shack Training Facility is $1.1M, with BCIT providing the building space, equipment and operational costs, valued at $500,000.
We are reaching out to industry partners for the remaining $600,000 needed to build this one-of-a kind facility in Canada (this includes $150,000 in sponsorships and bursaries). The Core Shack will be located in a high profile location within the BCIT Burnaby Campus and there is an excellent naming opportunity for the lead industry donor. In addition, we are looking for donation of core from a range of mineral deposit types.
