Mike Coates upon receiving his undergraduate degree from Simon Fraser University, began his marketing career as a management trainee with Sears Canada.

After thirteen successful years in both marketing and operational management assignments, Mike was recruited by the British Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA) as their first Regional Retail Sales Manager responsible for 18 branch locations. Four years later Mike left BCAA to enter into a managing partnership in the retail travel industry. His company specializing in group sport and themed cruise tours was a phenomenal success. Mike sold his partnership in 1993 and was recruited by HBC/Club Z Travel Group as the Regional Director for Western Canada.

In addition to his time marketing and business development career, Mike, in 1988, was recruited by the British Columbia Institute of Technologys (BCIT) School of Business as a contract, Marketing Management Instructor, a position he currently holds.

In 2002, BCIT was hired as the Business Development Manager for the School of Transportation, In 2009 he became the Director of Marketing and Business Development for the School until his retirement in 2011.

Born and raised in Vancouver, Mike attended Eric Hamber Secondary and received his Bachelor of Arts, (History) from Simon Fraser University and his Post Graduate Degree in Business Administration and Global Management (GDBA) (2008) from the University of Liverpool, UK, School of Business.

Mike is an active volunteer in the Greater Vancouver Community serving numerous charitable organizations, including nine years serving on the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Vancouver, Leadership Chair for the BCIT United Way campaign and as a past BCIT representative of the Vancouver Board of Trade as a VBOT Ambassador. Since his retirement from BCIT, Mike has served as President of his Strata Council and is an active member of the City of Surreys, RCMP Community Safety Committee and Block Watch programs.
