Project Description

$7M project to design the gateway into the campus from Willingdon Avenue, and to improve the pedestrian environment particularly for the transit hub of the campus.
This gateway space, is intended to achieve a number of key objectives for the BCIT Burnaby campus:
• To establish an entry gateway from Willingdon, especially for transit uses and people first arriving to the campus;
• To create a clearer campus identity and place of key arrival to campus
• To provide a priority for a pedestrian environment over vehicular environment
• To provide weather protection for transit users
• To animate and enhance the existing plaza at the Student Centre and Bookstore
• To provide a café / food service at the plaza to serve in animating the plaza and those on their way to and from transit (i.e.: Grab and Go Coffee)
• To showcase sustainability (Storm water, Lighting, Pedestrian / Cycle Movement, Materials, etc.)
• To demonstrate BCIT as a learning environment and showcase its learning skills (structures that demonstrate innovative use of materials, fabrication, and technologies)
• To provide for First Nations cultural identity and presence on the campus
• To ensure basic functions and services are provided (fire, deliveries, maintenance, infrastructures, etc.)
The focus of architectural design development is as follows:
• New major weather protection canopy running diagonally through the site
• To modify the existing three canopies in order to better integrate them with the new canopy and to provide a more contemporary look
• To prepare a program and schematic design options for the café / food service building pavilion and analyze costing of options
• To develop the detail design and contract documents for the preferred design of the café / food service building
• To develop Signage / Identity / Wayfinding
• Integrate the site design with the architectural design

Project Schedule

All construction work is completed by August 2021, with a construction period between January – August 2021.
