Large Cedar Hat Weaving - Dec 1st, 9 am to 4 pm

December 1 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm PST

Join Indigenous Initiatives in weaving your own cedar hat. This session is free for BCIT faculty, staff and students on Thursday, March 17th. We have our Knowledge Keeper Shy Watters of shishalh (Sechelt) Nation who also has Squamish, Sliammon (Coast Salish) and Kwakwaka’wakw to take us through three hours of training on teachings and protocols that go with making and owning a cedar hat. The cedar hat is yours to keep or traditionally give away.

Shy has passionately weaving red and yellow for well over 20 years and continues to explore her art with tenacity and enjoyment. The innovative patterns used by Shy’s cedar hats are popular and much of her work in sought after for cultural ceremonies. Here on the Sunshine Coast Shy is well-known for her work and she generously offers weaving courses throughout the year here on the coast and throughout BC.

Only 10 seats with current BCIT Indigenous students taking priority.
