Passion for Gears and Motors
The first thing you notice about Trevor Fane greeting you at his workplace is his pride in the company and his role there. The second thing you notice is that he’s a genuinely happy guy – the kind of happiness that comes from knowing what you want in a career.
After finishing high school where he dabbled extensively in electronics, Trevor concluded that his true passion lay not in capacitors and circuit boards, but in mechanical stuff such as gears and motors. That led him to Ballard Power Systems in Burnaby, where he worked his way up to lead technician. However, it wasn’t long before Trevor realized that he had to augment his education in order to open up the field of opportunities and continue his career growth. He found his answer with BCIT’s Mechanical Engineering (Manufacturing) Diploma.
After completing the 2-year program, Trevor didn’t have to look far to find his dream job: his future employer found him through the resume posting service on the BCIT website. Trevor now works as a senior technical sales specialist at SEW-Eurodrive in Delta’s Tilbury Industrial Park creating build-to-order (BTO) solutions for the company’s many industrial customers across Western Canada.
SEW-Eurodrive is a German-based company, originally formed in 1934 and now with $1.7 billion (CDN) in sales and 10,000+ employees working in over 100 plants worldwide. SEW provides the components that makes industry run, including geared motors and frequency inverters, servo drive systems, decentralized drive systems and industrial gear units. The company is very stable and financially secure, creating an intrinsically strong feeling of job security amongst employees. The SEW culture augments this positive environment with active internal development programs – Trevor has already been sent to Finland, Toronto, and Lyman, SC for advanced training. Future business travel could take him to Germany, China, and beyond.
Because of his education, Trevor has been given a broad set of responsibilities that encompasses engineering custom solutions, Inspections, Quality Assurance and AutoCAD. He now has a clear path into the management ranks in the medium to longer term. But Trevor’s not sitting still – he’s currently working towards his Bachelor of Technology degree in Manufacturing in BCIT’s part time studies program, which will help propel him even further and faster in the years to come.
