Digital Darkroom explores the fundamentals of working with digital images acquired from capture, with a focus on the image optimization process within Adobe Photoshop CC. This course will demonstrate how to produce a high quality image that can be reproduced for multiple purposes. Topics include colour theory as it relates to digital images, processing camera RAW files, non-destructive workflow within Photoshop CC, making selections, and working with layer masks. Course delivery is a lecture/lab format with in-class exercises providing hands-on experience.

  4. MDIA 2012 and GDES 1275 may be taken concurrently. This is not a self-paced course. You will be expected to be available and online on the posted days and times shown on your registration schedule. It is important you have a stable and consistent internet connection to access course content. Please log into learn.bcit.ca using your BCIT student email and password on the first day of class. You will require access to the Adobe Creative Cloud in order to complete this course. Students who are currently registered in one or more BCIT Flexible Learning courses are eligible for a free Adobe Creative Cloud subscription from BCIT. Up to two weeks prior to their course start date (and not before), please visit kb.bcit.ca, select the Student Resources section, and search for “Adobe Creative Cloud”, then follow the instructions in the article found to claim your free subscription.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Process camera RAW files with Photoshop CC’s RAW processing interface.
  • Process .jpg files in Photoshop CC using a non-destructive workflow.
  • Work with the appropriate file format depending on its content and usage.
  • Maximize the tonal range and correct a colour cast in a digital image.
  • Create detailed selections using the pen tool and refine edge tool.
  • Work with layers; Layer Blending modes and Layer Styles.
  • Apply non-destructive processing with layer masks and adjustment layers.
  • Perform non-destructive image retouching in Photoshop CC.
  • Composite multiple images together in Photoshop CC.
  • Apply colour theory as it relates to digital images and working with colour modes.
  • Crop, rotate, and resize images to meet specific requirements.
  • Export files from Photoshop CC for web use and print production.
