How it Works

BCIT is offering an exciting pilot program which reduces the amount of time an apprentice is required to be away from the jobsite. By offering the theory portion of technical training in a distance format, students will be able to reduce the time away from the jobsite to just the 2 weeks needed to complete the practical assignments and the final exam.

The theory portion of the program will be broken into both synchronous (real-time) and asynchronous (self-study) delivery. The synchronous portion will mean that students logon to their computer and receive a lesson in real time with an instructor for approximately 2½ hours, 2 nights per week between the hours of 6:00pm and 8:30pm. The first half hour will be reserved for questions arising from homework or the previous lesson. Synchronous sessions are recorded and made available to students for reviewing for the remainder of the course. The asynchronous portion will consist of approximately 12 hours of self-study each week, to be completed between the synchronous sessions.

The practical portion will still be delivered over a 2 week period at the end of the course in a face-to-face format at the BCIT Burnaby campus. This will take place Monday to Friday from 7:30am until 2:00pm each day. This will also include a final exam during this period of time.
