The prerequisites for all BCIT Computing Part-Time Studies “COMP” courses include: B.C. High School English 12 and Math 12 or equivalent knowledge.

There are additional prerequisites listed for every course and there may also be specific requirements for each program.

Please ensure that you are properly prepared for success in your educational plans.

Computer hardware and internet requirements

COMP courses are now conducted entirely online until further notice. Students must provide a current model PC desktop or laptop with a web cam, microphone and have high speed internet access. Courses will be delivered in real time and may use two way audio and video as well as group work.

Students must be computer literate and be able to log in during regular scheduled class hours in order to participate and complete each COMP course. Please contact the department via email: if you have any questions.

Prior Learning Assessment Recognition (PLAR)

We currently have PLAR exams for most computer application courses, some database, some math and many popular programming languages.

However not all COMP courses have PLAR exams available, and there is a limit on how many total PLAR credits you can receive in an credential.

PLAR in Computing PTS is achieved via written examination on a course by course basis and then graded by faculty members in the program area.

Students will typically need to spend weeks of self-study and follow the current course outline syllabus with the required or recommended text books.

Note: Please prepare for each PLAR by working through all the topics and complete related exercises in the text books, if you don’t do this you may fail.

There is a non-refundable fee charged in advance for each PLAR assessment exam, changing dates may result in additional room booking fees.

Email the Computing Department Program Assistants at to find out if there is an exam available for the course want to challenge.
