Before you Register for PELD Courses

Before you decide to enroll in our courses, here are some questions to consider:


Question 1:


Do you already have English 12 (or equivalent) completed with a passing mark of 50% or better?


YES
– Please submit a copy of your transcript by email to PELD@bcit.ca. You will also need to include your BCIT student number. If you do not attach your student number, you will not be approved to register for any courses.

Please refer to English 12 equivalencies.

NO – Please check with our Program Advisors to see which language skills (reading, writing, listening, and/or speaking) you need to upgrade for entrance into BCIT programs. If you are required to upgrade your reading and writing skills, please register for the COMM 0015 (Reading & Writing) assessment. If you are required to upgrade your speaking and listening skills, please register for the COMM 0033 (Speaking & Listening) assessment. If you need to upgrade all four language skills, you will be required to take both assessments. Depending on your test results, you will then be placed into the appropriate level(s). You do not need to take both assessments at the same time.



Question 2:


Have you taken an IELTS (academic format only), TOEFL (iBT forrmat only), or CLB/LINC test within the last two years?

YES – Please submit a copy of your test scores by email to PELD@bcit.ca. You will also need to include your BCIT student number. If you do not attach your student number, you will not be approved to register for any courses. Please see program entry for details of what scores you need from each test in order to meet the minimum requirements for placement into our program.

NO – You will need to take the COMM 0015 and/or COMM 0033 assessments for placement into our courses.



Question 3:

Have you completed the Pathway program from Vancouver Community College (VCC) within the last two years?

YES - Please submit a copy of your transcript by email to PELD@bcit.ca. You will also need to include your BCIT student number. f you do not attach your student number, you will not be approved to register for any courses. Please see program entry for details of what courses you would need to complete in order to receive placement into our courses.

NO - You will need to take the COMM 0015 and/or COMM 0033 assessments for placement into our courses.

Do you need more information regarding the COMM 0015 and COMM 0033 assessments?

YES – Please review some of the frequently asked questions regarding both these assessments.

NO
– Please skip to question 4.



Question 5:


What happens after I have submitted my transcript and test scores or after I have taken the COMM 0015 and COMM 0033 assessments?


If you submitted a transcript or test score – Please allow the department 2-4 business days to review your transcript. An email will be sent to you once a decision has been made with specific information on which levels you are approved to take.

If you took the COMM 0015 and/or the COMM 0033 assessments – You will be able to check your placement results after 5-7 business days from your test date by logging in to your D2L account. An automatic approval will be given so that you can register for the level you were placed at. The approval will be valid for one year after your test date.
