Sonepar Canada is a member of the Sonepar Group, the world’s largest privately-held electrical distributor. In Western Canada, Sonepar is represented by Gescan, Texcan, and Century Vallen. Sonepar operates a business-to-business technical distribution of electrical materials and related products and services.

Sonepar Canada has a national compensation plan across its operating companies. Given the economic regions across Canada differ greatly, the objective of this project is to conduct a market benchmark review for the Western compensation structure (approximately 900 employees) to ensure base pay, bonus, and pay mix is within competitive range to market.

In developing Sonepar’s new pay ranges, research was conducted into current economic and salary trends in Western Canada. Market data from salary surveys was analyzed and proposed pay ranges were developed using a market pricing approach. Sonepar’s internal salary data was then analyzed and compared to the proposed pay ranges to establish Sonepar’s competitive position in relation to the market. Hard to fill and hard to retain positions were addressed in accordance with Sonepar’s position in the market. In conjunction with external research, market data was also utilized to identify trends in variable pay.
