|Project Client:||Photon Control Inc.
|Project Description:||Systematic Layout Planning
|Students:||D’Atra Hennessey, Daniel Doulov, and Doug Foley
|BCIT Program:||Business Operations Management
In the fall of 2012 a group of BCIT Business Operations Management students was invited to determine where improvements could be made on the production floor in order to decrease the total distance travelled in work in progress, and increase labor productivity for the three highest volume products that they produce. Using a number of tools the team conducted a study to determine what type of changes would make the yield the most benefits in Photon Control Inc.’s areas of interest.
The study allowed the students to conclude that making changes to the overall layout of the manufacturing floor would produce the most opportunities for benefits in work in process distance travelled and labor hours productivity. Using a tool called Systematic Layout Planning several new layouts were created and studied until the optimal solution was found.
By implementing the proposed layout Photon Control Inc. will be able to realize the following benefits:
- Over 9km a year annually in work in process distance travelled savings
- A reduction in labor hours necessary in production, increasing labor productivity.
