Photon Control Inc. is a publicly traded company originally formed in 1988 based out of Burnaby, British Columbia. They create products for the oil and gas, power and utilities, and life science industries, among others. They create products such as optical sensors, spectrometers, and optical flow meters that are sold and recognized globally.

In the fall of 2012 a group of BCIT Business Operations Management students was invited to determine where improvements could be made on the production floor in order to decrease the total distance travelled in work in progress, and increase labor productivity for the three highest volume products that they produce. Using a number of tools the team conducted a study to determine what type of changes would make the yield the most benefits in Photon Control Inc.’s areas of interest.

The study allowed the students to conclude that making changes to the overall layout of the manufacturing floor would produce the most opportunities for benefits in work in process distance travelled and labor hours productivity. Using a tool called Systematic Layout Planning several new layouts were created and studied until the optimal solution was found.

By implementing the proposed layout Photon Control Inc. will be able to realize the following benefits:
Over the fourteen weeks that the project team worked with Photon Control Inc. they began to implement the recommended changes to the layout and immediately began to see improvements in labor hours taken for production and work in process distance travelled.
