Garibaldi Glass - Business Consulting Project

Project Details

Project Client: Garibaldi Glass Inc.
Project Description: Review Employee Training Records Processes
Students: Azaria Khan and Wendy McConnell
Term: Fall 2012
BCIT Program: Business Operations Management
A pair of BCIT Business Operations Management students were invited to Garibaldi Glass Inc. for their third term Process Improvement Project. The purpose of the project was to increase the effectiveness of tracking and recording the cross training that is a part of Garibaldi Glass Inc.’s workforce development as well as allow various employees within Garibaldi Glass Inc. to utilize the data to generate and print reports in regards to labour planning, recognition, and compensation.

The BCIT students conducted interviews and observed the processes involved with tracking labour information and entering it in the payroll software, EZ Labor. Through a cause and effect analysis it was determined that a standardized tracking process would be beneficial to them as the absence of an adequate tracking system has made determining the skill level of plant employees more difficult.

To achieve a standardized tracking process the team recommended a 6 step implementation process:
  1. Develop new cost centers for each task
  2. Implement competency ratings
  3. Implement the proposed labor form
  4. Implement the proposed EZ Labor report
  5. Implement the proposed Excel spreadsheet tools
  6. Print scheduled reports
Through following the implementation process Garibaldi Glass Inc. will provide shift coordinators and managerial staff with access to a centralized source of training and experience data about all plant employees; the consistency and utility of worker training information will be greatly improved.
