Canfor is facing a major skills shortage. In fact, Canfor will have to fill approximately 1,000 jobs per year for the next three years just to replace workers who are retiring.

To help meet this need for skilled workers, Canfor has asked the BCIT team to assist in the development of an international recruitment strategy. Having consulted Canfor about their needs and priorities, the team established criteria upon which to determine which countries would be most able to quickly supply Canfor with the skilled tradesmen it needs. Two countries were recommended as high-priority locations. In addition, a tool was developed to help HR staff keep track of the documentation and processes involved in immigration. With the tool in place, staff will need only minimal training to be competent in guiding international employees through the immigration process.
