Beachcomber Hot Tubs is a family owned hot tub manufacturer based in Surrey, British Columbia. The company was founded in 1978 by owners Keith and Judy Scott with the determination to produce innovative and quality high end hot tubs and accessories, and has since expanded to over 50 countries worldwide.

While Beachcomber is a successful company, market pressures have put emphasis on continuous improvement of production and administrative processes. With this in mind, Beachcomber has continually collaborated with the BCIT Business Operations Management program and invited students to utilize the skills and expertise developed from the program for improvement projects.

Beachcomber invited the BCIT student team to determine the feasibility of utilizing the Material Requirements Planning (MRP) module in Syspro’s Enterprise Resource Planning software.

The study identified two key symptoms in the Operations team:
  1. 28% of managerial time dedicated to manual data entry activities.
  2. Excessive company risk – concerns with knowledge specific to tasks solely known by the person performing the task.
Through interviews, group brainstorming session, and data analysis, the study determined that Syspro’s MRP is feasible and Beachcomber should implement MRP in addition to supplementary training. This will:
The Student team has successfully acquired buy-in from the Operations team through team workshops. Beachcomber has since approved the proposed solution and is proceeding with the implementation.
