The world is at a crossroads, balancing our industrial needs with the environmental costs. Changes in the environment and in our cities means that we need to change how we approach complex issues – whether they be in the field, the city, or the laboratory. A dynamic career in applied and natural sciences puts you at the forefront of this change.

Q & A

Why did you choose a career in energy management?
Andrea: In my early career, I did not really understand that energy management was part of the solution. I decided to make a career change because I believed that there was a better chance of making a difference starting today through energy reduction. BCIT offered a program on energy management and I was blown away by the practical nature of the training. It was not theory; it was real people doing real work, with industry professionals teaching the up-and- coming energy managers.
How is BCIT doing its part in meeting the emerging human resource needs of the energy management sector?
Alex: The SEMAC program is a result of collaboration between BC Hydro and BCIT. It’s industry-driven, completely relevant, and ensures grads are job- ready for the new green economy. Students usually complete all the required courses within one year, attending courses delivered in the evenings and on weekends. In a world that moves as fast as ours, a short and intense return to school is, in my opinion, the best way to be successful in evolving your career.
