The Trades Learning Centre will be closed on July 1, November 11, December 28 & 30, 2010.


There will be no Trades Pre-Entry testing and no tutorials available during this closure.

The Trades Pre-entry Test is designed to show that you have the necessary academic skills to succeed in your trades program.

You are eligible to take the Trades Pre-entry test if you:

  • » lack entrance requirements for Trades training or
  • » are required to take the Trades Pre-entry test for a chosen Trades and Apprenticeship program or
  • » are attending high school and consider your skills or abilities to be above the Trades or Technical studies program admission requirements

Trades Pre-entry Test Descriptions

The following Pre-entry Tests are in multiple-choice format.  If you take all of your tests on the same day, they may take up to four hours to complete.

  • English - Reading Comprehension

  • Mathematics
  • » Basic arithmetic operations, algebra, and word problems
  • » Calculators permitted
  • » 48 questions
  • » 40 minute time limit
Additional tests are required for students applying for the following programs:
  • Airline and Flight Operations – Commercial Pilot
  • » Abstract Reasoning - Multiple choice
    • • tests your ability to predict the next event in a series of geometric figures and designs
    • • 40 questions- 20 minutes
  • » Vocabulary - Multiple choice
    • • 40 questions- 25 minutes
  • Airport Operations
  • » Spatial Relations - Multiple choice
    • • tests your ability to predict what a two-dimensional pattern would look like in three-dimensions when rotated in space
    • • 50 questions- 25 minutes
  • » Vocabulary - Multiple choice
    • • 40 questions- 25 minutes
Power Engineering Technical program only if you do not meet the physics entrance requirement
  • » Physics
    • • Measures general physics competence
    • • 11 questions for a total of 31 marks – work must be shown for each question to receive full marks
    • • 30 minute time limit
