Part-time Associate Certificate 7720acert

Overview

The construction industry places significant value on training as it is vital to the continued success of any construction related business. BCIT is committed to the long term goal of meeting the increasing shortage of qualified personnel and recognizes that the acquisition of new skills will equip the worker to excel in his or her workplace and deal with the ever-changing challenges. BCIT offers multi-level, part-time studies programs designed specifically for people who:
  • have industry experience and want to upgrade their skills,
  • are active in some facet of the industry and wish to enhance their career potential, or
  • wish to continue their ongoing education.

The Program

BCIT and the Vancouver Regional Construction Association (VRCA), have teamed up to offer multi-level, part-time studies training programs for people in the construction industry who wish to enhance their career potential. For a full list of our school's programs visit our Area of Study section.

The Construction Operations program consists of 6 core courses (18 credits and 6 credits of approved electives). View the Program Matrix for a listing of courses. And check out our Frequently Asked Questions flyer [PDF .5MB] for commonly asked questions.

Program Entry

Entrance requirements

The Construction Operations program is open to anyone, subject to minimum entrance requirements (Grade 10 Math and English) and is specifically designed to accommodate individuals with a trade background.

Students who are unsure of basic necessary skills for a particular subject matter (such as math or computer skills) are encouraged to enroll in a refresher course to avoid frustration as they progress in their studies. Students with strong basic knowledge will be able to excel in their learning when advanced topics and subject matter are covered in later courses.

Program declaration

Effective January 7th, 2016, Program Declaration requests must be completed online. A declaration fee will be assessed at the time of the request. BCIT will no longer accept paper Program Declaration requests starting January 7th, 2016. Students who submitted paper declaration requests prior to January 7th, 2016 are not required to pay the fee.

Declaring your Part-time Studies program ensures that BCIT is aware of your intent to complete a program as it is currently outlined. BCIT continuously reviews programs and implements changes based on industry and market trends. Program Declaration guarantees that credit for courses which are a part of your program will be honoured despite program requirement changes.

Program Declaration also provides the opportunity to apply for transfer credit.

It is not necessary to declare prior to registering in most part-time studies courses. It is a good idea to complete one or two courses before submitting your program declaration. Check your program's Entry page for specific requirements.

Upon approval, a program plan will be sent to you confirming your program of study.

Program Details

Program length

All courses are either six or twelve weeks in duration. Classes are held weekly, typically from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Burnaby campus. Various courses are offered in all three terms. Particular courses are sometimes offered in successive terms depending on demand. For upcoming offerings, please check our website 6 to 8 weeks prior to term start. Register early as courses fill up quickly. Potential students are advised to weigh their professional and personal commitments carefully when planning their academic calendar. This will help them determine how many courses they are able to attend in one term, and the overall time required to complete the program. Some courses are offered as online web courses as well as in-class.

Grading

A grade of 50 percent is required to pass all courses. Grades are based on course work, midterm exam(s) and a final exam.

Accreditation

Gold Seal Certification

The Canadian Construction Association (CCA) has implemented a Gold Seal designation for qualified:

  • site superintendents
  • estimators and
  • project managers.

Each applicant must meet a number of requirements, including an educational component with specific topic criteria. These criteria as well as an overview of the Gold Seal program can be viewed at the CCA's Web site.

BCIT provides the educational component of the Gold Seal requirement through the Construction Operations and Construction Supervision program. BCIT does not issue any credentials on behalf of Gold Seal; the Canadian Construction Association administers the Gold Seal program and issues the appropriate credentials.

Continue your education

Students who are interested in entering the Bachelor of Technology in Construction Management must check the entrance requirements for the program and consult with the Program Head. Depending on your background, some of the courses from the Construction Operations and Construction Supervision programs might assist you in meeting the entrance requirements for the degree program. Please note that completion of these two programs alone is not sufficient to be admitted to the degree program.

Graduating & Jobs

Job Opportunities

Job opportunities are varied, and an increasing number of employers are looking for employees who have successfully completed the program. Students may start in positions such as project coordinator or junior project manager.

Graduate employment outcomes

The BCIT student outcomes reports present summary findings from the annual survey of former students administered by BC Stats one to two years after graduation. These reports combine the last three years of available results for the 2013-2015 BCIT Outcomes Surveys of 2012-2014 graduates and for Degree 2010-2012 graduates. The reports are organized into three-page summaries containing information on graduates' labour market experiences and opinions regarding their education. More detailed information can be accessed at the BC Student Outcomes website.

To view these results, you may need to have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed in your Web browser.

Apply for graduation

Upon successful completion of all program requirements, complete an Application for BCIT Credential [PDF] and submit to Student Information and Enrolment Services.

Allow approximately six to eight weeks for processing.

All financial obligations to the Institute must be met prior to issuance of any credential.
