Part-time Associate Certificate 6465acert

Learn To Create Apps

Web and Mobile Application Development (WMA) is an associate certificate program from BCIT Computing and is built on top of the Applied Software Development (ASD) program.

You must already know how to write code and develop applications in two object oriented programming (OOP) language environments; C#.NET and Java, plus you must already understand how to build web pages with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, jQuery and PHP before starting WMA.

Please understand the WMA program is a second level associate certificate and that it requires significant prerequisite knowledge in object oriented programming, systems analysis and design, as well as multiple web scripting languages.

As a web programmer you will learn to use OOP languages, as well as server-side and client-side scripting technologies to develop software applications which run on web sites and mobile devices.

You will receive hands-on ASP.NET and Java Web application programming courses, plus second level web scripting courses in HTML3, CSS3, advanced JavaScript and PHP. Integrating open source tools is an important part of this program.

Elective options are available in Android and Mobile Applications, iOS Application Development, XML for PHP, ASP MVC and MySQL.

Web and Mobile Application Development graduates will have an understanding of several web technologies and be able to develop industry standard software applications which run on web sites and mobile devices.

WMA includes second level web scripting and development tools, students must already have these skills as prerequisites.

COMP 1850 - Web Development and Design 1 or equivalent knowledge in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and FTP.

COMP 1920 - Web Scripting with PHP Level 1 or equivalent knowledge of PHP.

COMP 2015- Introduction to JavaScript and jQuery or equivalent knowledge.

Some students may wish to complete the Applied Web Development - Associate Certificate simultaneously.

A number of shared credits may apply to these credentials.

Be sure that you have the required knowledge and skills before enrolling in any course.

You are also expected to have excellent command of English and Math at a BC high school Grade 12 level or equivalent.

Before starting this program, students should have some work experience or post-secondary education in either business or computing.

Program declaration

Effective January 7th, 2016, program declaration requests must be completed online. A declaration fee will be assessed at the time of the request. BCIT will no longer accept paper program declaration requests starting January 7th, 2016. Students who submitted paper declaration requests prior to January 7th, 2016 are not required to pay the fee.

Declaring your Part-time Studies program ensures that BCIT is aware of your intent to complete a program as it is currently outlined. BCIT continuously reviews programs and implements changes based on industry and market trends. Program declaration guarantees that credit for courses which are a part of your program will be honoured despite program requirement changes.

Program declaration also provides the opportunity to apply for transfer credit.

It is not necessary to declare prior to registering in most Part-time Studies courses. It is a good idea to complete one or two courses before submitting your program declaration. Check your program's entry page for specific requirements.

Upon approval, a program plan will be sent to you confirming your program of study.

Declare Now

Please allow approximately 8 weeks for processing.

Note: Please complete COMP 1850 before declaring your intent to complete this program.

Scheduled intakes

Ongoing Part-time Studies intakes: January, April and September.

Costs & Supplies

The WMA program is built on top of ASD or equivalent education, the cost of the prerequisite ASD course tuition and books is around $ 4,000.

The cost of WMA alone is an additional cost of $ 5,000 tuition and books, so the total cost to complete the WMA associate certificate is actually around $9,000.

Please Note:

WMA folllows on from ASD and students must already be solid object oriented application developers in Java and C#, as well as understand HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript,  jQuery and PHP 1.

Some students may be able to complete both ASD and WMA in sequence in around 4 years depending on course load. Keep in mind these are part-time programs and designed to be delivered one course at a time and each course has specific prerequisites.

It is not possible for most students to fast track these associate certificates due to prerequisites and scheduling, some courses are not offered every term.

Most students complete these part-time associate certificates with 1-2 courses per term.

COMP courses could have 10+ hours homework each week.
