Overview

PLEASE NOTE – Thank you for your interest in the Registered Nurse First Assistant program.  Unfortunately we are not accepting applications at this time.  Please check back in August of 2012.

BCIT's RN First Assistant program provides participants with the theoretical foundations for the RNFA role and the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required for practice through labs and supervised clinical experience.

The Program

The RN First Assistant (RNFA) practices perioperative nursing and collaborates with the surgeon and the health care team in performing a safe operation with optimal outcomes for the patient. Activities included in first assisting are an expansion of perioperative nursing practice and involve preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative responsibilities.

The BCIT RN First Assistant Program was developed and implemented in 1998 based on input from surgeons, RNFA's, nurse educators and administrators. The multidisciplinary faculty includes a physician, RNFA and nurse educator and a variety of instructional methodologies including part-time computer assisted distance learning, face-to-face tutorials and laboratory sessions, plus a 175 hour surgeon-mentored clinical internship.

The program will be offered using a variety of educational delivery methods including on-line, print-based, classroom and laboratory sessions, and a clinical practicum.

Currently, admission into BCIT’s Registered Nurse First Assistant program requires five years of relevant Perioperative nursing practice, Canadian Nurses Association Certification in Perioperative Nursing (CPN (C)), as well as other criteria.

For further information on the RNFA role, visit the Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC).
