Part-time/Distance & Online Learning Advanced Specialty Certificate 5840ascert

Overview

The Computed Tomography (CT) Certificate program provides technologists with the knowledge, skills, and competence necessary to become practicing CT technologists. The program is offered through Part Time Studies with the theory courses offered in a distance education format. After completing the 5 theory courses, students are required to complete a 3 month clinical practicum. BCIT has agreements with a number of clinical sites to provide for this experience. Detailed arrangements for the practicum will be arranged on an individual basis.

The Program

The program is a post-diploma advanced specialty certificate consisting of five theory courses in Physics and Instrumentation, Clinical Applications, and Sectional Anatomy, as well as a three-month clinical practicum based on the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) model. The overall goals of the program are to provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to work competently in CT.

The program consists of five theory courses:

  • Physics and Instrumentation
  • Clinical Applications
  • Sectional Anatomy (three courses)

Specifically, graduates will be able to:

  • Provide for the safety of patients and personnel in the conduct of the CT examination
  • Prepare and position patients for a wide variety of CT examinations as defined in the record of clinical experience
  • Operate the CT scanner and its accessory equipment
  • Operate image processing and recording equipment
  • Manipulate and evaluate CT images and communicate images electronically if required
  • Perform selected quality control tests for CT imaging system performance
  • Demonstrate professional conduct and attitudes
  • Work as a member of the CT imaging team

Program Entry

Entrance requirements

To enter the program, all candidates must be registered technologists in one of the following:

Note: Technologists who have not undergone a criminal record check through their Canadian employer may need to undergo a Criminal Record Check [PDF] before approval to do a clinical practicum.

Procedure for Arranging a CT Clinical Practicum

BCIT's School of Health Sciences co-ordinates clinical practicum courses for post-diploma certificate programs. You may choose the clinical site of your choice for the practicum or BCIT will assist you in finding a suitable practicum site, subject to the site's approval. A qualified assessor must be available in order for you to proceed to the clinical practicum site. The practicum includes a Record of Clinical Experience, Competency Profile and Assessor Guidelines. BCIT provides a Compressed Time Frame (CTF) clinical practicum for practitioners who have been working full time in their fields for a minimum of one year.

If you perform your clinical experience in BC, you will gain Workers Compensation (WC) and Liability Insurance coverage when registered in the BCIT clinical course. If you perform your clinical practicum in another Canadian province, you must ensure that you have WC coverage during the practicum. If you perform your clinical practicum outside Canada, you will need to arrange liability insurance and WC coverage.

The following steps provide a guide to arranging a clinical practicum:

  1. Complete all theory courses
  2. Call Euclid Seeram, program head at 604-432-8231 or 1-800-663-6542 ext 8231 or email euclid_seeram@bcit.ca to discuss the clinical practicum preliminaries
  3. Select a training site of your choice if one is available and be prepared to identify a contact person for the site, and send this information to the program head.
  4. If you do not have a preferred site, BCIT will assist you in finding a suitable site
  5. he program head checks if there is an affiliation agreement between BCIT and the site is already in place.
  6. If there is an agreement in place, then you may register for the clinical practicum course by contacting Victoria Banham, the program assistant, at 604-432-8727 or 1-800-663-6542 ext 8727.
  7. If there is no agreement is in place, BCIT will contact the site to establish an agreement
  8. The site may accept or reject the agreement. If the site accepts the agreement, register according to (6) above. If the site rejects the agreement, another site must be found, and the affiliation process begins again
  9. The cost for registering for the practicum course can be found when you register for the course. There may also be a cost associated with the training site. You must then negotiate this cost with the site
  10. Course materials must also be ordered from the BCIT bookstore at the time of registration
  11. You must complete the assessor form for each site at which you will be doing a practicum and return all signed forms to BCIT before the practicum begins
  12. The assessor must be a qualified technologist in the field of study and must have certification from the CAMRT or another recognized professional medical radiation association.
  13. On successful completion of all of the above, clinical training begins

Please allow at least three months for establishing an affiliation agreement between BCIT and the clinical site.

BC provincial exams

Provincial exam marks are required for English 12, Communications 12, and Technical and Professional Communications 12. BCIT does not require provincial exams for Grade 12 Math and Science courses.

Program declaration

To determine if the courses you intend to take will be applied towards a credential you must declare your program. This ensures that BCIT is aware of your intent to complete the program as it is currently outlined.

Program declaration enables you to declare a program of study and outline the courses you plan to complete to meet the program requirements. Program declaration also provides the opportunity to apply for transfer credit. Upon approval, a confirmation letter will be mailed to you outlining your program of study.

To declare your program, please submit the Part-time Program Declaration form [PDF]. This form is also available at Student Information and Enrolment Services. Please allow approximately six to eight weeks for processing.

*prior learning assessment challenge courses

MRI and CT students may challenge three of the four cross sectional anatomy courses by writing a comprehensive challenge exam if they have at least one year's work experience in CT or MRI. In order to approve a student's eligibility to challenge these courses, we must receive a letter, on letterhead, from your MRI/CT supervisor verifying this experience. If you are eligible to challenge these courses and wish to do so, please contact the Program Assistant at 604-432-8727/1-800-663-6542 ext. 8727 for more information.

Transfer credit

Do you have credits from another BC/Yukon post-secondary school? Do you want to know if they transfer to courses here at BCIT? Check out BCIT's Transfer Equivalency Database to find out.
