Overview

Note: This program consists of one course divided into units.

The Associate certificate program provides students with up-to-date practical training needed to explore a career in biotechnology. If you have a recent Bachelor of Science in a molecular-based life science but lack practical training, this program can provide you with the laboratory skills required to be successful.

BCIT is the first post-secondary institute in the province to offer a condensed time frame program in Biotechnology.

The Program

The program consists of both laboratory (75%) and lectures (25%). You complete standard examinations and lab reports, assignments, lab skills exams and tests throughout the course.

Program Entry

Entrance requirements

  • Recent Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent in a molecular-based life science.

  • Students should come to the course with strong theoretical knowledge of the following: Biochemistry, Molecular Genetics, Cell Biology, and/or Microbiology.

  • English 12 (B) and English language proficiency
    (for students who do not have university level English courses)

Students who do not meet these requirements should consider upgrading or completing education to meet the above requirements.

BC provincial exams

Provincial exam marks are required for English 12, Communications 12, and Technical and Professional Communications 12. BCIT does not require provincial exams for Grade 12 Math and Science courses.

Apply to program

Submit applications directly to the Program Assistant. A review of your application package and an interview will be conducted in early March to determine acceptance into the program. Only those who meet the requirements will be contacted for an interview. Twenty students maximum are admitted per intake.

Applications must include:

*Applicants who completed post-secondary studies outside of Canada, United States or England will require an evaluation of their transcripts by the International Credential Evaluation Service (ICES).

Program length

13 Weeks

Grading

Students are evaluated on a continual basis with practical tests, exams, assignments, lab reports, etc. BCIT will issue a final grade at the end of this course. Students must pass all practical exams with a minimum of 70% and may NOT fail more than one (1) of the following units: Cell biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry.

You require a passing grade of 60% to receive the Associate Certificate.

Job Opportunities

Research shows that industry supports the BCIT Associate Certificate in Biotechnology to assist with their human resources needs. Individual experience can vary, but you can expect to find employment as research technologists in biotech companies. Entry level salaries range from a minimum of $30,000CDN to $40,000CDN per year.
