Overview

The Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic Apprenticeship requires time learning on the job and in the classroom. A Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic trainee must complete a four-year program including 6000 workplace hours and 720 in-school hours of training. After completion of training, a passing grade on exams will result in the ITA Certificate of Qualification (Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic), Certificate of Apprenticeship and the Inter-Provincial Red Seal Endorsement.

The Program

Students work on mechanical and electronic components of off-highway equipment. This includes most equipment systems such as fuel, brakes, steering, suspension, tracks, under-carriage, hydraulics, transmission, emission control and exhaust, engines, electrical, cooling and air conditioning.

Entrance requirements

  • Completion of Module One for Heavy Duty Trades

    There are 3 ways that an apprentice may be granted credit for this module:
    1. Attend an entry level technical course from the Heavy Duty Mechanic Foundation program.
    2. Successfully pass the Module One Level Exam through the ITA.
    3. Your employer may complete an exemption request form and return it to the Industry Training Authority.

The following requirements are recommended (but not required) and are used as a guideline for success in this apprenticeship program.

*Note: High school graduation is recommended by the Industry Training Authority (ITA). Please refer to the ITA website for current apprenticeship prerequisite information.

Students who wish to attend apprentice technical training must be registered as an apprentice with the Industry Training Authority.

Potential students with medical or physical disabilities should contact the Disability Resource Centre to arrange an interview with the institute's rehabilitation specialist at 604-451-6963 (telephone interview is acceptable for out of town applicants).

Within 2 weeks of submitting your training request, a letter will be mailed to your home address. This letter details information on how to sign on to myBCIT, your one stop shop for BCIT apprentice communication. myBCIT is where you will receive your training confirmation details.

Books and supplies

CSA approved safety glasses and footwear required. Footwear must be steel-toed, leather, ankle covering boots.

There is an approved book list for the Heavy Duty mechanic apprenticeship. These books are available at the BCIT Bookstore on the Burnaby campus.

The heavy duty mechanic apprenticeship includes home study that apprentices are required to complete during each level of their technical training. The home study material is available at the BCIT Bookstore and should be bought by the apprentice prior to each level of technical training.

Financial assistance

Income support for apprentices is provided by Human Resource Development Canada (HRDC) through regular Employment Insurance (EI) eligibility. For questions regarding Employment Insurance or Personal Support Payments, please visit the income support overview for current BCIT apprentices.

Program Details

Program length

The total amount of in-school, technical training for a heavy duty equipment mechanic apprenticeship is 720 hours. There are 4 levels of technical training; each is 6 weeks long.

During your time at BCIT, 50% of the time will be spent in a classroom environment and 50% will be spent working on equipment in our shops.

Grading

Minimum passing grade is 70 per cent.

Credential

BCIT offers a Diploma of Trades Training for apprentices who have successfully completed their technical training at BCIT and have been granted a British Columbia Trades Qualification (IP/TQ). In trades where there is no requirement to complete a Trades Qualification (TQ), a Certificate of Apprenticeship is acceptable.
