Note: This program is currently only offered at BCIT's Kelowna Rutland Campus
Power sport technicians troubleshoot, repair, rebuild, and maintain a wide variety of outdoor power equipment ranging from all terrain vehicles (ATVs) and snowmobiles to chainsaws and lawnmowers.
The Program
This 20 week entry-level program is designed to provide you with the theoretical knowledge and mechanical aptitude to become competent in repairing and rebuilding power sport engines and equipments.
After successfully completing this Power Sport Technician Foundation program, you will receive credit for your first level of apprentice technical training from the Industry Training Authority (ITA), and 300 hours credit towards your "time in trade."

- -OR- Trades Pre-entry Test for English 10 and Math 10. For further information about the Trades Pre-entry Test, please contact 604-451-6832.
Note: Grade 12 is recommended by the Industry Training Authority (ITA). Please refer to the ITA website for current apprenticeship prerequisite information.

Trades Discovery
The Trades Discovery General and Trades Discovery for Women are full-time programs designed to prepare you to successfully enter and complete a Trades Training program.
Please note: As this program is also offered in a high school setting, applicants to the high-school delivery programs will be required to undergo a criminal record check [PDF, 10 KB]. Applicants can contact their local police department to obtain the appropriate forms. Please be aware that the outcome of the criminal record check may influence your acceptance into programs offered in high schools or those that are primarily attended by high school students at BCIT campuses.

Students are responsible for their own CSA approved safety glasses (non-tinted) and footwear. Footwear must be steel-toed, leather, ankle covering, lace-up boots.

Use Safe Work Practices
This course is designed to introduce you to WorkSafeBC's occupational health and safety regulations and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHIMS). You will learn how these regulations apply to your workplace environment as well as the proper use of personal protection equipment (PPE), general shop safety procedures, and fire safety procedures. (Note: this is a requirement for all other courses within the program)

This course is designed to familiarize you with the various hand and power metalworking tools and measuring devices. You will gain practical skills to safely move, lift, and hoist various loads and equipment. Prerequisites: PEMX 1200

A course designed to provide you with the theoretical understanding and practical skills needed to identify and use the correct procedures for using fittings and fasteners to attach various types of hoses, pipes, and tubing. Prerequisites: PEMX 1200

Grading
The passing grade in each course is 70%. All courses must be passed in order to successfully complete the program.
Industry training authority
BCIT transfers to the Industry Training Authority (ITA) the student's name, contact information, Personal Education Number (PEN), and the name and date of the completed ITA Foundation or Entry Level Trades Training (ELTT) program. This information is used for the purposes of tracking successful completions in order to grant credit towards apprenticeship where applicable, and communicating with trainees to promote continuation in an apprenticeship program.

Technicians and mechanics with experience on a wide variety of equipment are always in demand. Employment opportunities exist with retail outlets and service centres, while some graduates find satisfaction in owning and operating their own service and repair business.
