Communicating clearly and effectively is a valuable asset for any service sector worker. Effective communication improves productivity, increases understanding with clients, reduces misunderstandings in the workplace, and contributes to improved practice in the classroom. This course provides an opportunity for students to improve their study habits in order to succeed through the rest of the program.

The course covers basic safety concepts in the following: the application of the Workers Compensation Act, general safety practices for trade areas, basic body mechanics for lifting and moving objects, identification of the three classes of fires and types of extinguishers, and the identification of hazardous materials. As well this course identifies some trade specific safety practices as they relate to the Refrigeration field.

This course prepares students to read manufacture information, supplier catalogs, and other specific information as it applies directly to the HVAC and refrigeration industry. In addition, it is designed to introduce students to the types of documentation available and the required skills needed to complete Refrigerant Logs and maintenance records. Students will gain a greater familiarity with the use of computers for accessing and processing information. As well, students will develop their ability to read and interpret drawings.

This course introduces students to basic safety and welding procedures using oxyacetylene and oxygen welding equipment. It includes safety, shop practice, procedures and operation of related equipment. The welding work carried out in this course prepares for the work typically required by Refrigeration Contractors.

As in any trade activity, students must have a comprehensive knowledge about the different kinds of tools used within the Refrigeration field. This includes recognizing the proper application of any given tool along with safe practices and usage associated with it. In addition the course prepares students to increase their knowledge about the different kinds of fasteners and fittings used in piping trades. As a result, this course will identify the types and their application. Course activities include practical exercises on the proper use and fabrication of piping projects.

This course sets the foundation for further studies in refrigeration system operation. A complete understanding of the topics introduced in this course is essential to further development. It will explore all components as they relate to refrigeration systems, as well as in-depth study of refrigerants and proper piping design.

In this course, students acquire basic skills that they can apply in their work as refrigeration mechanics. Specific skills include learning how to properly recover refrigerant, charge, pressure test, evacuate, service and troubleshoot various types of refrigeration and Air Conditioning systems. Students also learn basic start-up procedures and periodic maintenance tasks and will work with a computer-based simulator program to perform troubleshooting tasks for commercial and supermarket equipment.

This course sets the foundation for further studies into electricity for the HVAC. Students will acquire a detailed understanding of electrical fundamentals to ensure comprehension of more complex electrical studies to follow. This course also deals with the principles of magnetism and how it is used to create motion as applied to single and three phase A.C motors. In addition, the course covers the selection and application of circuit and motor protection devices. Students will work with applicable sections within the electrical code. Finally, course activities will allow students to perform detailed interpretation of electrical diagrams and develop control circuits.

This course covers the basic concepts of electrical circuits and symbols which are found on all HVAC and refrigeration systems. A complete understanding of electrical diagrams and the ability to interpret them is of utmost importance for successful career in the industry. As a result, students spend a lot of time working with a variety of diagrams.

This course covers the operation and use of basic electrical test equipment such as voltage ohm and amp-meter. Students will gain a greater awareness of their operation and acquire the skills to use them effectively and safely. In addition students will apply the above electrical meters to operational control circuits to determine proper electrical operation of circuits.

This course covers the proper installation procedures for electrical and mechanical components. These installation procedures will meet all electrical code requirements as well B-52 Mechanical Code conditions. Students will work on electrical control boards as well as actual operational equipment.
