It indicates and stresses the importance of customer and interpersonal relations in this industry and defines 'Customer Relations'

Basic Mechanical and Safety
The Basic Mechanical and Safety course is designed to give the students the practical skills required to become a safe, efficient business equipment technician. They will study safe work practices for the service shop and in the field. They will learn to use the tools required for microprocessor controlled, electromechanical devices. They will study simple machines; light and optics; and review electro mechanics.

Computer Operating Systems
This course introduces students to the installation, configuration, maintenance and support of computer operating systems. Operating systems from the Open Source community, Apple and Microsoft are introduced with emphasis being placed on those from Microsoft. This course, in combination with TELX 4432 Microcomputer Maintenance, prepares the student for the COMPTIA A+ certification exams.

Basic Xerography
This course covers everything a technician needs to know about how a copier makes a copy. The course follows the development of photocopiers from the early history, through various improvements to present day technology. The Xerographic process is studied in detail. The paper movement is explored from the pick up of the first sheet to the delivery of the last, including the positioning required to make a second print on the same piece of paper.

The Copier and Printer Operations course teaches the students how to operate copiers and printers. This is a user level course which focuses on the knowledge that a person would need to connect and use these devices. In addition to being able to operate the equipment the students will learn how to explain the operation to customers and other end users.

The focus of this course is to teach communication skills necessary for a service technician to relate effectively with: customers, co-workers, supervisors, sales representatives and prospective employers. Areas of study will include listening skills, handling conflict situations, representing the employer well and developing good working relations within the company.

Shop Skills
This is a 2 part course. The first part deals with service administrative tasks and responsibilities. The concepts of service contracts are discussed as well as other ways that work is billed such as Time and Materials, Warranty, and Third Party. Students are introduced to the typical types of paper work encountered on the job. Students learn the importance of record keeping and the significance of many types of information taken from typical forms used in industry. Students then design a set of forms and prepare start up and operational spreadsheets for a fictitious company. The second part of this course introduces the student to the principles and practices involved for producing high-reliability solder interconnections. Students will practice various processes for wire soldering, through-hole circuit board component soldering. High-reliability rework and repair of single and double sided circuit boards is included.

Electronic Control Systems
This course covers the electronic circuits that control and drive analog and digital copiers and printers. We begin by reviewing the AC and DC power supplied. Next, we explore the main controller circuit and all the AC and DC sub-control circuits. DC motors and their control systems are included. Finally specialty test charts, preventative maintenance, trouble shooting and service self diagnosis are covered.

Microcomputer Repair
This course introduces the students to the hardware fundamentals of Personal Computers, Workstations, Servers and related peripheral items. Theory of operation of typical system components and peripherals is covered. Emphasis is placed on troubleshooting, repair and general support procedures for onsite technicians. Hardware and software interactions and interdependencies are explored and analyzed. Students will learn how to perform diagnostic testing for fault isolation using advanced diagnostics, operating system features and internet downloads. This course, in combination with TELX 2232 Computer Operating Systems, prepares the student for the COMPTIA A+ certification exams.

Digital Copier/Printers
The Digital Copiers and Printers course is designed to give students a working knowledge of various styles of computer printers and digital copiers. The course components include user operation, print driver installation, electronic operation and mechanical operation. The students will not only learn the theory of operation, but also the proper servicing techniques for various makes and models of printers and digital copiers.

Colour Copiers/Printers
The Colour Copiers and Printers course is designed to give students a working knowledge of the operation, installation, service and repair of digital colour office equipment such as: scanners, printers and copiers. They will study the theory of light and colour, colour separation and colour mixing. In addition, they will explore scanning software and hardware as stand alone devices and as a part of a digital colour copier. They will study colour printing, using various technologies, both as stand alone printers and as a part of digital colour copiers.

Career Strategies
This course introduces students to the skills necessary to find employment. Students will create personal resumes and business letters. In class presentations as well as peer critique, group critique and personal feedback are used. Discussions and examples are used to illustrate where to find jobs via personal networking, want ads, placement agencies, or cold calling. Interview preparation and different techniques that can be employed to make a favourable first impression are presented and discussed. Students are required to perform a job search, including follow up, and to keep records on the status of each individual contact.

Data Communications and Networks
This course covers the role of data communications in the Business Equipment industry. It introduces the students to the concepts, the software and the hardware of Data Communications and Computer Networking. Data transmission and communications in both the Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) environments are explored. Overall emphasis is placed on installation, configuration, testing, troubleshooting and maintenance of the network hardware and software. The basic operation of the public switched telephone network (PSTN) is introduced. Development of the Local Area Network, LAN history, architectures, physical/logical topologies and networking devices are studied. Hardware devices, software setups and system configurations for peer to peer and client server networks are studied in class and practiced in the lab. Discussions and presentations are made regarding the basics of security issues. There are also discussions regarding legal, ethical and licensing issues as they pertain to local and wide area networks. The Internet is looked at historically and developmentally. TCP/IP and the TCP/IP suite of protocols are examined.

Work Experience
This course introduces students to the workplace. Companies from the Computer and Business Equipment program's Advisory Committee and those who have hired previous graduates host students for one week at a time. During this time students will be assigned to accompany a technician (or technicians) to observe and assist in the performance of normal service activities. This may be in the field, in the shop or a combination of the two. This course establishes industry contacts for the students as well as creating potential references and job opportunities.
