The Backpack Video Journalist

Are you already working in journalism and hoping to broaden your multimedia knowledge?

This program, developed by working professionals to help other journalists develop diverse shooting and editing skills, trains you with the most current equipment and techniques. You’ll learn to find, research, shoot, and edit video footage for compelling stories all on your own.

And, you can choose a single course to focus on your own career needs, or complete the six courses and earn your Backpack Video Journalist Statement of Completion in about a year with part-time studies.

Who should complete the Backpack Video Journalist Statement of Completion?

The courses in this program are designed for journalists who want to shoot and edit their own stories and need more specific skills. It could be right for you if:

  • You’re a reporter looking to develop more skills
  • You’re creating a small documentary

What grads can do

With the courses in this program, you’ll learn to shoot and edit at a location to produce newsworthy and engaging content. With one course, or with the six courses to earn your statement of completion, you’ll be building your resume and your skills for a stronger, successful career in journalism.

Also, many students continue their studies by transferring their credits to other part-time studies programs within the Broadcast & Media Communications Department.

Program Entry

About Part-time Studies

Take a single course, or work towards a credential — all at a pace that's right for you.

Part-time courses are offered in a variety of scheduling formats, including at night or on weekends, flexible day time delivery, or you can opt for distance or online learning. If you meet the prerequisites and there's space available, you can register for a course immediately. Courses are offered in each of three terms: Fall (September), Winter (January) and Spring/Summer (April).

To be successful in BCIT's fast paced applied learning environment, it is strongly recommended that students have English proficiency in all four language skills: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Two years of education in English in an English-speaking country and English 12 are strongly recommended for success. For information on English equivalencies, testing and upgrading options, visit:
Formal application to the Statement of Completion is not required. Upon successful completion of the courses, email the Program Contact with your full name, student number, and mailing address to be issued a Statement of Completion.
