Business Systems Part-time Studies Course

Course Details

Computers and information technology are the foundation of business today. This course provides an understanding of computer terminology, operating systems, and the most popular office software used in business. Students learn to use spreadsheets (e.g. Microsoft Excel, Google Spreadsheets), word processing applications (e.g. Microsoft Word, Google Documents), and presentation and graphics programs (e.g. Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Presentations, Keynote). Students also get an introduction to cloud computing and enterprise collaboration tools. The course also provides an overview of social media, Web-based collaboration, and publishing and productivity tools (e.g. WordPress, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube).

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Open, save, create, move, copy, delete an rename files in a Windows environment
  • Recognize and apply common features among Microsoft Office Applications
  • Understand and navigate the Microsoft Office Interface (ribbon, tabs, groups, help)
  • Create, print and save documents (includes system default file location, why and how to save in different formats)
  • Insert, delete, move, copy, find, replace and spell check text (includes Autocorrect, thesaurus, language and date features)
  • Format characters, text, paragraphs, and pages (includes page breaks, go to feature, margins, orientation, manual page breaks, page numbering)
  • Work with graphics (introduction to images and shapes and text boxes): Describe default settings for graphics in Word, Excel and Power Point
  • Understand and apply the order of mathematical operations in MS Excel
  • Manage worksheets by inserting, hiding, deleting and adjusting rows and columns
  • Use introductory Excel functions such as sum, average, count, max, min, and round
  • Create and modify charts in MS Excel and MS PowerPoint
  • Define target audiences for your PowerPoint presentation, and select designs, themes, and content appropriate to your audience
  • Create, edit, and arrange and print a presentation
  • Work proficiently with graphics within PowerPoint
  • Create and Edit SmartArt and WordArt in PowerPoint
  • Insert, edit, format, and manipulate text boxes, shapes and objects in MS Office Applications
  • Apply transitions, animation and sounds to a PowerPoint presentation
