Course Details

Provides a working knowledge of Part 9 of the 2012 B.C Building Code as it applies to single family dwellings. Gives students the basic skills required to check plans, inspect buildings and deal with questions relating to Part 9 at an elementary level. Covers acceptable materials, systems and methods used in housing construction. Students must bring B.C. Building Code to the first class. (3 credits)

  2. ***This is not a self-paced course. There will be specific time lines for assignments and exams.*** A computer with speakers and a web camera is required for this course. You must also have an e-mail address and access to a computer capable of downloading basic documents. Students will participate in weekly "Blackboard-Collaborate" sessions, scheduled 7:00pm - 8:30pm PST each Thursday for the 12 weeks of the course. The online D2L "Welcome Module" for the course will open and be available April 27, 2015. Students are to review the "Welcome Module" prior to the first "Blackboard-Collaborate" session. ALL FINAL EXAMS MUST BE WRITTEN DURING THE LAST WEEK OF THE COURSE ON DESIGNATED DATES AND TIMES. ***This course is offered in conjunction with the Building Officials' Association of B.C. Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, the student will be able to:

  • Check plans of single-family dwellings for compliance with the regulations in the BC Building Code, at an elementary level (provided the student has the ability to read plans).
  • Inspect single-family dwellings relative to compliance with the regulations in the BC Building Code.
  • Deal with questions relating to Building Code requirements for single-family dwellings.
  • Have a basic understanding of acceptable materials, systems, and methods used in house construction.
