BCIT partners with other institutions to launch blog for educators

May 30, 2006

The British Columbia Institute of Technology has joined forces with Simon Fraser University, the University of Victoria, and the University of British Columbia in a multi-institutional initiative funded by BCcampus to develop a blog environment to support faculty in BC’s public post-secondary institutions. The blog, called "Social Learning", was completed May 2006, and is being showcased at educational conferences in BC this spring. Blogs are used in education for course notes, portfolios, reflections and newsletters.

"BC’s educators can use this site as a source of information for supporting the use of social software in education, or join the site and contribute questions or materials of their own," says Vivian Forssman, manager of BCIT’s Web Services and leader of this project. "The site may prove to be a painless introduction to blogs for instructors who are just starting to experiment with this new communication channel as an online learning community."

Social Learning, which can be found at www.sociallearning.ca, will capture the energy and growth of blogs, wikis and other social software tools. It will house tutorials, workshop materials, screencasts, podcasts, and a blog that will be populated with custom-created materials and some of the best content available from the educational technology community worldwide.

Social Learning has already begun showcasing at conferences in BC earlier this year. The next presentation of the new blog will be at the Educational Technology User Group Conference on June 1 and 2, 2006 at North Island College’s Comox Valley Campus.
