Getting More Help
Where is my course?
You can access your course two ways:
- Through the online learning log in page via myBCIT.
myBCIT is the best way to access your online course. After you log in, click on the myCourses tab and click on the title of your course. If you do not see any content, you should contact your instructor directly.
- Through the D2L direct access page, https://learn.bcit.ca; use your myBCIT ID and password.
I forgot my password.
Your default BCIT ID password is your date of birth - year, month and day - in the format YYMMDD.
For example, if you were born on March 20, 1985, your default password would be 850320.
If you don't know your password, you can use the Student Information System to reset your password.Top
I can see the course title in my list of courses but I can't click on it. Why?
You do not have access to your course until the actual start date.Top
Is there a sample D2L course that I can preview?
Yes. Log in to D2L and click on the blue button at the top right to self-register into the guided tour course.Top
How do I submit an assignment?
Assignments are handed in with the Dropbox tool. First, create your document and save it on your computer where you can find it again. From inside of the course, click on the Dropbox link in the navigation bar. Click on your assignment name in the list. Click the "Add a File" button, then "Browse" for your completed assignment document that you saved. "Open" the assignment and it will then click the "upload file" button at the bottom right. Click the "Submit" button to hand your assignment in.Top
I'm having problems with the Respondus Lockdown Browser
The Respondus Lockdown Browser must first be downloaded and installed on your computer. The link to the installation page is here. Once you install the browser, you MUST shut down everything on your computer, and launch the Lockdown Browser. Then log into your Desire2Learn course, and click on your Quiz to begin.

I received a warning message that says "This Page Contains Both Secure and Non-Secure Items" and now parts of the page are appearing blank and links don't open. What do I do?
D2L content is on a secure server. Many links in a course link to material that is not on a secure server. When you click on a link that goes to a non secure server, you will see a message. You must answer "No" in order to view the material on the non-secure server.
If you have already clicked "yes", just shut down all your browser windows then log back into your course. When you see the message, click "No". Now you should be able to see all parts of the page and all links will open properly.Top
Why can't I use my D2L email account like a normal one?
The D2L email is more like a messaging system than an actual email system. It is automatically set up to forward messages to your preferred email account.Top
I'm in an online course - how do I contact my instructor if they are not replying to email?
First, please check the course news on the home page and the content area to see how your instructor wants you to contact them. If they have not specified their preference, and you have tried the email tool and have not heard back from the instructor, you could contact the Program Assistant for your program to see if they have contact information on file to share with you.Top
A web link in my course is broken, can you please fix it?
The instructor is the first person you need to contact about broken links. If your instructor isn't able to fix a link, they can contact the Technology Service Desk to fix it for them.Top
Why can't I see the "Start Quiz" link for my quiz or exam?
Your instructor may have set the quiz to require the Respondus Lockdown Browser. You will need to download the Lockdown Browser, launch the software, log in to D2L, and navigate to your course to view the "Start quiz" link.Top

How do I give special access to a quiz or assignment for a student who missed the deadline?
Click on the quizzes or drop box link on the navigation bar, then click on the quiz or assignment. Click on the "Properties" tab, and scroll to the bottom. Click "Add Users to Special Access" button, and enter the new start and end dates for that student. Select the student from the list and click the "Add Selected" button. You can do this for several students, giving each student different access times. Click the "Save" button or all your work will be gone!Top
How do I create groups and assign to private discussion areas?
Click on the groups tool on the navigation bar, and create a Group Category - this is like a folder that will contain your groups. Give the category a name. Select the Enrollment type, add the number of groups you want to create, and, optionally, automatically set up the discussion areas here.
If you do not set up the discussions when creating the groups, you will have to set up the discussions in the Discussion tool, and select the group in the Restrictions tab to restrict access to just that group.Top
How do I create questions for a quiz?
Click on the Quizzes tool in the navigation bar. Click on the Question Library. Under "Create New", select your question type (true/false, multiple choice, etc). Give the question a title, e.g., Q01. Fill in the blanks, including the question text, the selection of answers, and the correct answer, and then SAVE the question.Top
Why can other students see other private group discussions which they are not in?
Most likely the private discussions were not set up properly - please edit the discussion forum or topic to ensure restrictions are set to only allow the specified group access to the forum or topic.Top
