Website Evolution

Over time, the BCIT web presence has evolved to optimize user experiences and keep BCIT up-to-date with new technologies and external trends on the internet.

2010

bcit.ca gets a completely new look and feel and the wider format extends to every page on the site.

2009

Screen shot of the updated program catalogue pageThe new program catalogue debuts, featuring an improved integration of marketing and program material.

The new program catalogue also marks the introduction of a wider layout to take advantage of increased available screen size.

2008

bcit.ca's templates are updated to use new code techniques for faster loading times and smaller file sizes.

Work begins on updating the online program catalogue.

2007

The look and feel of bcit.ca morphs to reflect the new BCIT graphic standards.

Authorized content is offered on bcit.ca for the first time.

2006

The migration of over 6,500 pages on bcit.ca into the Version 3 design is completed.

Discussions about improvements and Version 4 of bcit.ca begin.

2005

myBCIT introduces "channels", so departments and faculty can target information to specific groups, and students can access useful and educational material in a customizable personal workspace.

The BCIT TEK initiative sponsors development of new online learning tools, including blogs and WebFiles.

2004

Version 3 of bcit.ca, the current design, launches with newly organized information that’s easier to find. Behind the scenes, the new Marqui content management system allows departments to update their own web pages.

The Commons is introduced as free web space for academic and instructional support, research projects, and other organizations to host their websites.

2003

To prepare for Version 3 of the public website, research, user testing, focus groups, training, and product evaluation are initiated.

2002

Grades become accessible online through myBCIT. Faculty can now submit them with the click of a button and students can check them from anywhere.

2001

With myBCIT, students get free email accounts and can access course information, communicate with their instructors and classes, and update their contact information in one place.

2000

Version 2 of bcit.ca presents new common look and feel guidelines for all websites and adds a common header and footer on all pages.

Website visitors directly access detailed program and course information from our database. Course information is easier for staff to keep accurate, and standards are set about online information for students.

1999

Updated online registration communicates directly with the course database, so students know before registering if courses are full.

1998

Banner Self Serve comes online, faculty, staff & students can check and change their contact information online.

1996

Version 1 of bcit.ca debuts when BCIT buys the bcit.bc.ca domain name and tries to link the various existing sites into one web presence. Online course registration consists of an online form emailed to the Registrar's Office.

1995 and earlier

Forward-thinking BCIT programs, departments, and organizations set up websites for themselves in different places on the web.
