Short-term and Apprentice Housing

If you need a place to stay while completing a short-stay or apprenticeship program, consider the convenience of living right on campus. Fifty-seven of the 336 rooms in Maquinna Residence have been allocated for students in short-stay and apprentice programs at BCIT.

The residence is situated at the south end of campus, a short walk from classes, recreational facilities and medical services. You have your own bedroom in a townhouse-style suite where 12 students live together, sharing kitchen and cooking facilities. The apprentice suites are co-ed and non smoking, with shared bathrooms.

BCIT does not have residence accommodation for couples or families. Refer to the Off-Campus Accommodation Listing Service for listings appropriate to your needs.

Cost

The cost of a short-stay/apprentice room at Maquinna Residence for 2012/2013 is $640 per month (pro-rated at $128.00 per week). Accommodation less than 30 days will have an addition of 12% HST added onto the rent amount; ($143.36 a week). Short-stay students pay more than regular full-time students because of the frequent cleaning/maintenance schedule associated with short-term stays.

How to Apply

When you know your program start and end dates, contact the Housing Office. If space is available in residence we will fax or e-mail you a Short-stay/Apprentice Residence Application. Acceptance is on a first-come, first-served basis, so book early as accommodation is limited. Reservations are taken up to 12 months in advance. We will mail you a confirmation once you are accepted into residence.

Move-in and Move-out

If you are accepted into residence, you may move in on the day preceding your course start date. Move-out is required by noon on the last day of your course.

Parking

A portion of the residence reserved parking is allocated for short-stay/apprentice students living in residence. Stalls are assigned on a first come, first served basis and cannot be reserved in advance. If available, the cost of a reserved stall in the residence lot is $13 per week, and is paid in full, for the entire length of stay, when the permit is purchased. If space is not available in the residence lot, parking permits for the BCIT public lots adjacent to the residence are available online through e-permits on the BCIT website or daily passes can be purchased from the ticket dispensers on campus.

Confirmation and Cancellation Policy

Approximately seven weeks prior to your residence move-in date, one of the Housing Office staff will call you to confirm your room reservation. Once this confirmation is made by phone, if you decide to cancel your room reservation, a cancellation fee of one week's rent will be added to your BCIT student account.

If you were accepted into residence less than seven weeks prior to your move-in date your room reservation is confirmed. If you decide to not take the room, a cancellation fee of one week's rent will be added to your BCIT student account.

Off-campus Housing for Short Periods

If you choose to live off campus or if no rooms are available for the dates of your program, the Housing Office can assist you. A variety of suitable short-term accommodation is available in the community, including private homeowners who have rooms or suites available for short periods, bed and breakfast agencies and local hotels.

The cost varies according to the type of accommodation you select.

To receive an up-to date list of short-term accommodation by e-mail, mail or fax, please contact the Housing Office.
