Student Housing

Where You'll Live

The Maquinna residence complex incorporates a low-rise, split-level design to create a village-like student community. There are seven houses: Carrier, Chilcotin, Haida, Kootenay, Nootka, Nisga'a and Salish. Each house contains four suites (each suite large enough to accommodate 12 students), one Residence Advisor's apartment and a laundry room.

Each suite contains two floors of bedrooms and bathrooms; fully furnished dining room and living room, including cablevision, and two full kitchen areas, all to be shared by the 12 residents.

Each bedroom floor contains six bedrooms; a bathroom with two separate toilets; two private showers; a vanity area with two sinks and a large mirror.

Each bedroom is approximately 10' x 11'; complete with carpeting, blinds, furniture, and high-speed internet. A telephone jack and a cable jack are also included, which you may activate through the appropriate service providers.

Bedrooms

Your comfortable single bed has three built-in storage drawers and a vinyl or nylon-covered, firm mattress measuring 36" x 80." For extra comfort, you may bring, or purchase after arrival, a simple mattress pad or a foam piece to place on top. (Note that the mattress is an unusual size). A desk, chair, bookshelf, study lamp, bureau, built-in closet, 4' x 4' bulletin board and a wall mounted mirror complete the bedroom furnishings. Ample closet space is also provided.

Bring your own pillows, pillowcases, sheets, blankets, towels, small TV and photos of family and friends. You can personalize your space by moving furniture around - simply restore the original grouping when you move out. Due to limited storage space you may not substitute the residence furniture with your own furniture. All furniture provided by BCIT must remain in the bedroom. Waterbeds are not permitted.

NEW! You can order bedsheets and other dormitory supplies with our partner company, Campus Linens Canada. Your order will be shipped right to your bedroom at Maquinna Residence upon your arrival. Please visit the website at

www.campuslinenscanada.com.

Common Living Areas

Enjoy the spacious living room, dining room and kitchen as you socialize, relax, and prepare meals with your roommates. You can use the dining room tables to study, work on group projects or play games.

Lounge

A common lounge for use by all residents is located next to the Housing Office. The lounge is a multi-purpose room containing a television, pop machine, a phone for free local calls, and pay phones for long distance calls. At times the lounge is used for residence activities, meetings and movie nights. You are also free to use this space for study groups.

Kitchens

Each suite kitchen has two full-size stoves, three refrigerator/freezers, one microwave, two sinks, and considerable cupboard and drawer space. The kitchens are divided into two separate work areas, with six residents sharing each side. You each have two cupboards and a drawer for storage of food and cooking items.

Bring your own utensils, dishes, cookware and small countertop appliances. You share a refrigerator with three others, so food co-ops among several people work well. Working successfully in a shared kitchen requires good cooperation, communication and respect.
