Types of Harassment & Discrimination

Harassment

Any unwelcome remarks, behaviour, or communications based on certain grounds when:

  1. Submission is a term or condition of working or learning
  2. Submission or rejection is used for making educational or working decisions
  3. The conduct interferes with performance
  4. The conduct creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment

Sexual harassment

Unwelcome sexually oriented conduct under the conditions described in 1-4 above.

Personal harassment

Unwelcome remarks, behaviours or communications which misuse authority, or abuses power* and has the effect or purpose of threatening, demeaning, intimidating or seriously abusing an individual or group under the conditions described in 1-4 as above

Note "Power" is not organizationally-mandated power.

Discrimination

Against students

Denial of any accommodation, service, facility or opportunity that is customarily available to the public on certain grounds and except where there is bona fide educational requirement.

Against BCIT employees

Refusing to employ or to continue to employ, or refusing an opportunity or benefit with respect to employment, on certain grounds and without bona fide occupational requirement.
