"I am truly grateful to BCIT donors for their recognition and financial support. Thanks to them, I could benefit from all the educational opportunities that BCIT offers without the pressure of extra loans."
~ Wistara Van Snellenberg, 2010 Medical Radiography Technology program graduate, Recipient of three student awards
Wistara van Snellenberg is an example of many highly trained and experienced professionals who select BCIT to help them further succeed in their careers.
The 31-year old with a master's degree in kinesiology and an advanced certificate in Athletic Therapy was drawn to BCIT's Medical Radiography Technology program while searching for a career that offered a work-life balance and fit with her interests in physiology and health care.
With her outstanding educational background and professional experience, Wistara immediately stood out as a leader. She became a class rep, participated in the program advisory committee and contributed to the redesign of the MRAD program.
Despite following a tight budget, Wistara's savings ran out in the second year and her student loan only covered tuition, rent and basic groceries. She was relieved to get $1,500 in bursary support that made it easier to focus on her education.
"I am truly grateful to BCIT donors for their recognition and financial support," she says. "Thanks to them, I could benefit from all the educational opportunities that BCIT offers without the pressure of extra loans."
In June 2010, two graduating achievement awards totalling $1,500 helped Wistara transition from full time studies to securing a job at the major trauma centre in the Ottawa Hospital without getting into further debt.
Once she gains more experience, Wistara intends to further upgrade her skills and broaden her efforts into research for health care improvement.
